Nicki Minaj is easily one of today’s most successful female rappers, but she has called out the hypocrisies of the industry on numerous occasions, and she feels like she isn’t taken as seriously as her male counterparts because of sexism.

Interestingly enough, in a new interview she kind of hints that she finds a little bit of hypocrisy in Kendrick Lamar’s success.

The female emcee opened up about her usage of multiple personalities and animated voices in her music, and tells Elliot Wilson:

“You said that you didn’t get the voices before, but liked them on here: why? Because you listened. Because you listened. Because people you respected were on the track, and that’s fine, I understand that…I got a call from Mister Cee after he heard ‘Bottoms Up,’ and he said he had to give me my props. ‘Bottoms Up’ was very animated, but he took the time to listen, you know what I’m saying? It takes skill. And then I see people doing it now. Sometimes, when I hear the animated things that Kendrick Lamar does…I respect and like him, but when I paid attention to certain things he does, I think to myself: ‘I did that.’”

  1. Meh. I disagree here. The changes in his voice and her animations are two totally different things, especially when it comes to the content of what they’re talking about. I actually like it when she does it (now) but before, it was overkill.

  2. Nicki please sit your delusional a-s down. You got you animated voices from the originators, Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliot.

    1. Me either. When I hear Kendrick changing up his voices Nicki never comes to mind. They have different styles.

  3. This is so out of order. Lots of rappers have changed up their voices way before Nicki even came along. Now that her album isn’t doing that well, perhaps this is the time for her to humble herself.

  4. Methinks she’s jealous. I know it’s harder for female rappers to make it but if Nicki really wanted to be taken seriously, she could have put more of her focus into making better music and better rap lyrics. Instead she’s all about shock value and lame stunts. She’s a pretty woman, but all that twerking won’t get you on the top 5 emcee list.

  5. First and foremost, Nicki needs to understand that the reason Kendrick gets a lot of praise is because he’s literally a lyrical genius and a poet (and no I’m not one of those bandwagon Kendrick stans, I don’t like all his work), Nicki’s punchlines don’t even compare to Kendrick’s metaphors and how he puzzles his lyrics. Secondly, rappers have been doing crazy voices way before Nicki came onto the scene (Busta Rhymes, Missy Elliot, Eminem, ODB etc.), so that’s not something she can take credit for.

  6. This is laughable. Leave it to Nicki to give herself more credit than she deserves. And I want these young people to stop acting like she’s the best female rapper of all time. She can’t see Latifah, Lauren, Kim, Left Eye, Foxy, Brat, Lyte or Eve.
