Taraji P. Henson Talks Not Wanting to Be Just a Black Actress + Beating the Statistics

Taraji P. Henson was elated to win a Golden Globe, and she tells Entertainment Tonight the award is important to her because she doesn’t want to just be recognized as a black actress.

She says:

“When you say Golden Globe to me, that’s international. That’s all over the globe. I never wanted to just be recognized as an American actress, an African-American actress…I just wanted to be recognized as an actress…someone who can touch and move your spirit and your soul so thank you Hollywood…this means the world to me.

“I’m just a girl from DC from the hood. I had a dream. I could have easily been a statistic. I was a single mother. I became a mother in college and I could have easily become a statistic but I didn’t. I rose above it and I showed people that just because you have a baby doesn’t mean life is over.”

      1. I saw that. Some people were even comparing her to Whitney. I’m like y’all please chill. Everybody is drunk or at least tipsy at the Golden Globes. The only one people don’t mess around with is the Oscars.

  1. I’m happy for her but she has to know Hollywood will never let her just be an actress. Her race will always be a factor to the powers to be. Proof in the pudding is that fact that she didn’t get a Golden Globe until she played a former drug dealer.

  2. Yes she was tipsy……I love Taraji but was her hair drunk too??? Cuz it’s all over the place, a mess, looks sweated out, looks lost and confused, looks horrible. Her stylist and or personal assistance did her wrong

  3. You know I totally understand it when she says she just wants to be an actress. That’s a privilege her white peers get all the time. They can get almost any role because race isn’t a disadvantage for them, unlike minorities. The same things happens in corporate america. Black people can never just be anything. Race is a label we are stuck with and judged for.

  4. That a-s was tipsy last night and Miss Cookie was feeling herself….and rightfully so, props to her for the win because she has made Cookie part of popular culture. However, she’s not Meryl or Cate and therefore that label of black actress will follow her for the rest of her life. It is, what it is.

  5. Love Taraji but I think she made a fool out of herself last night. I don’t care about white celebs being drunk. She’s a black woman and she can’t be sloppy like them and still book good roles. I hope she gets it together and realizes she has to be smarter than this. All anyone could talk about last night is how much of a mess Taraji was. That’s not a good look.
