Will Smith Explains Why ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ Role Was So Challenging

On Variety’s “Actors on Actors,” he tells fellow actor  Benecio Del Tero:

“It’s funny because I’m just getting to that place in my career when I’m being able to let it go. I started out on the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”…first real acting. Every actor on the show was stage trained actors. So, in order to compensate for not having any form of theatrical training, I would learn the screenplay inside out and backwards.

“I remember I would memorize other people’s lines and everything. I got into an over-calculating, over organized mindset really just in the last two years of my life finding my way to just let it rip. To just get comfortable. Let it go on set…”

  1. Benicio tho!!! *eyes emoji* Something about that man drives me insane (in a good way). Oh yea, Will looks good too! lol

  2. He didn’t have the experience but he worked hard to become one of the best actors on the show. That’s admirable.

  3. Good for him that he went in and took it seriously instead of acting like an entitled rapper with a little fame under his belt.
