John Legend Schools DJ Envy

DJ Envy took to Instagram to alert his followers on just how John Legend was able to change his mind about Stop and Frisk.

VLAD TV writes:

After days of rigorous debate over law enforcement’s institution of Stop and Frisk in poor communities of color, DJ Envy declared on Thursday [September 29], that he’s had a change of heart on his position supporting a modified version of the policy. The Power 105.1 radio host announced the shift via Instagram, following an in-depth discussion the show’s hosts had during the morning’s episode of The Breakfast Club. It was in processing the argument posed by their politically active guest, singer John Legend, who said, “We have rights to walk through the streets without unreasonable search and seizure. That’s the fourth amendment,” that Envy says he was challenged to reconsider his thoughts on the former NYPD tactic.

“I had an opportunity to have a wonderful conversation with him today where he provided me and our listeners with a great deal of useful information regarding stop and frisk. This information played a large part in me revisiting my thoughts and opinions regarding stop and frisk,” Envy wrote.

In his message, Envy confessed to having once been an opponent of Stop and Frisk, but felt forced to give second thought to where he stood on the issue after a recent attempt on his life. He expressed having felt conflicted over the virtue of the policy, considering he knows what it’s like to have been profiled by police, all the while fearing that he or a loved one could potentially lose their lives due to senseless gun violence.

John legend is a firm supporter and advocate of black lives matter. I had an opportunity to have a wonderful conversation with him today where he provided me and our listeners with a great deal of useful information regarding stop and frisk. This information played a large part in me revisiting my thoughts and opinions regarding stop and frisk. As a black man in our community, I have been subjected to stop and frisk on numerous occasions and have had bad experiences with police officers who abuse their power. Upon all of those occasions, I had gone home and complained to my family and/or shared it with breakfast club listeners. I am the son of a retired detective and still had contempt for the law and the officers that carried it out. I was firmly and vocally against stop and frisk… That all changed about a week ago when someone tried to MURDER me in an attempted robbery and carjacking… I was shot at several times with an illegal gun . Thankfully, through the grace of God, I was able to escape with my life and go home to my family. It was as though a ton of bricks fell from the sky and gave me a different perspective on stop and frisk based on my experience. The only thing that I could think is that these streets aren’t safe and that illegal guns need to be removed. I have been on both sides of the equation… A person reduced to being stopped and frisked and a person who’s life was almost taken from him with an illegal gun. I said that stop and frisk could be an option if it could be administered PROPERLY and FAIRLY. Voicing that opinion created a much-needed discussion about the topic. It angered a lot of people and causd a surge of information to rise to the surface… some information that I was not aware of previously… After several conversations within my community with @johnlegend and with my wife, I am not too proud to say that my views on Stop and Frisk have changed.. I spoke too soon..

  1. John Legend is a good one because I am not trying to educate another person of color on something they should know. I’m tired. Really tired.

  2. I cant knock him. I may have had a change of heart myself if someone attempted to rob me. Most of the shooting in our community is done with illegal killings. However, there has to be a better way to stop the violence than stop and frisk

    1. Yeah. Like restricting the access to illegal weapons in the first place. I mean come on why pay taxes if police do nothing to prevent the illegal gun trade or even attempt to target those who smuggle and sell. Obviously to enable genocide of black at the hands of our own people. That way their hands are “clean” are we blame each other.
