‘Being Mary Jane’ Star Raven Goodwin Doesn’t Want to Be Labeled Curvy + Gabrielle Union Explains the Show’s Reset

Raven Goodwin opens up about labels in a recent interview, and she prefers to be label free, even when it comes to the curvy movement.

The YBF writes:

“Being Mary Jane” star Raven Goodwin is gearing up for the season 4 premiere of the hit BET series that’s set to premiere tonight. TheYBF.com caught up with the 24-year-old actress for a chat where she dropped a few gems that caught us by surprise.

For starters, Raven hates labels. Because, why have labels when you can just be you?

The YBF actress, who’s currently enrolled in film school, tells us that no matter what “label” people put on her, she’s going to be her authentic self.

“I don’t categorize myself,” she tells TheYBF.com. “I’m a woman. I’m a black woman. No matter my size, shape or whatever, my gift is to act. That’s my gift. That’s one of my many purposes that I’m going to live out and I’m going to accomplish.”

She continues,

“I’m just Raven. If I want to keep the weight, I’m going to work. If I lose the weight, I’m going to work. I love showing love to girls who look up to me who may be plus size. That’s what I’m here for. But at the same time, all of the labels make it difficult for us to just exist.”

In related news, Gabrielle Union opened up about the new season of “Being Mary Jane,” and she claims moving the show to New York is a reset.

Here’s an excerpt of her interview with Entertainment Weekly:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Where does season 4 pick up?
GABRIELLE UNION: Well it’s told in a bit of flashbacks in a sense. You find out after [Mary Jane’s niece] Niecy experiences police brutality, Mary Jane, in trying to take a more hard line in dealing with police brutality, is fired/pushed out of SNC. Kara [Lisa Vidal], on the heels of her own sexual harassment lawsuit from season 3, has also left. Kara has bounced back a bit faster in that she’s become a producer for a top morning news show, not unlike the TODAY show or Good Morning America. She brings Mary Jane on as a correspondent and basically allows her to truly start over. But it’s in New York. It’s her first time in a long time of being away from her family. She really wants to use this as an opportunity to reset her life.

The previous three seasons were set in Atlanta. How does New York change things?
Well, her being away from home, much more of the focus is work-oriented as opposed to season’s past. There was a greater balance of work-life so you saw a lot more of her family. But you also saw the codependency of it all. Moving it away from Atlanta to New York is the biggest difference: she’s not codependent in the BS. She’s actually stepping out on faith that maybe her family can get it together on their own without her constant — she would say help, they would say meddling. It really allows everyone to grow. New York is really just a massive reset button. Everyone says if you can make in New York, you can make it anywhere. You see Mary Jane struggling to make it.

  1. I’m not feeling this season. I know we’re only one episode in but it was extremely boring. Hopefully things will pick up soon.

  2. I think the producers are making a mistake by moving her away from her family. Her family played a major role in the show and gave her more depth. Now MJ just seems very lost and all the progress she made last season is gone.

  3. The change to New York and less of her family is something I don’t think will work out. I wonder why the producers decided to go this route. It’s made the show dull.
