Yandy Smith Denies Lying About Marriage + Responds to Being Viewed as Ratchet

The most recent season of LHHNY was full of drama for Yandy Smith.

She spent the majority of the season going back and forth with Mendeecees Harris’ exes Samantha Wallace and Erika DeShazo.

In fact, although Mendeecees is currently serving time in prison, it didn’t stop him and Yandy from trying their hardest to make Erika seem like she was nothing more than an old fling, despite the fact that Yandy admitted in a prior season that Mendeecees and Erika were actually in a serious relationship when Erika became pregnant.

Then of course things got really crazy at the reunion, and while arguing with Samantha, Yandy’s sister and hair stylist ran from the audience and attacked Samantha while she was being restrained by security.

Yandy pretended to not know who attacked Samantha, but footage later proved she was well aware of what went down.

She received backlash for the season and reunion shenanigans, but most of the backlash is stemming from the fact that it was confirmed that she and Mendeecees are not legally married.

However, Yandy still feels like their “marriage” is the real deal.

She tells BET:

“That is my husband. There is no piece of paper that will say that is my husband or not.

“For me, personally, I loved that man since the day I met him and that is my baby, my baby daddy, my husband and everything in between.

“It was never a lie, and still, as I said, that is my husband, you know? And I think that, as women, sometimes we have to put ourselves and our needs first and our children’s needs first and that is exactly what I did. When I gave my vows and when he gave his vows, I meant every word of it. It was unfortunate that we were advised at the time not to send the paperwork off, but from that moment I gave my vows, that was my husband.”

Yandy also responded to the critics who are suggesting LHHNY isn’t a good look for black people as a whole:

“I feel like there’s a lot of backlash to reality TV and I do understand, as a mother, why there may be such, but I think what viewers need to understand is this is for entertainment purposes only.

“No one signs a Love & Hip Hop contract and there’s an amendment that says, ‘I’m also signing up to be a role model.’ Morally, yeah, you should have some responsibility to your community. I do believe that, but again, the purpose of these shows [is] to entertain. When they stop entertaining or when they fail to entertain, they will no longer be on the air.

“So, I think a lot of times instead of pointing fingers at reality TV, people need to turn and point the finger at themselves because if you stop watching and you stop thinking it’s so ratchet, there will be no reality TV. But because so many people watch it and are entertained and continually support, the advertising dollars keep coming in, the bigger budgets keep coming in, our paychecks get higher every season. You know, you are helping for this to stay on the air.”

  1. But she’s still lying. In this interview she said her and Mendeecees were advised not to turn in the marriage certificate but on the show she said she didn’t tell him she didn’t turn it in and he had no idea they weren’t legally married. She lies too much.

  2. Yandy is delusional. Calling someone your spouse means nothing if the state doesn’t even recognize it.

  3. Yandy probably thinks that she’s above being labeled ratchet because of her college degree. Not true!!
