Cato finds a new hustle via minstrel shows.
The episode opens up with white people being seated for a minstrel show. However, the actors are black and make use of white face.
The opening scene is a hit with the white audience as it mocks white southerners.
However, in the second scene, the founder of Philadelphia is mocked and this doesn’t sit well with the audience.
As the audience members begin to stand up and walk out, Cato is shown laughing from a seat above the stage. Apparently he owns the minstrel show and is profiting from offending white show goers.
Georgia is arrested for fraud.
Police raid Georgia’s house, and they claim she is a fugitive. Before she leaves with police, she asks Elizabeth to locate her freedom papers.
It is revealed that Georgia is actually a freed slave and this whole time she has been passing for a white woman. She tells Elizabeth not to tell this information to Lucas and the rest of the Free Staters.
Ernestine is asked to teach her old ways.
Clara learns of Ernestine’s past with her former master, so Clara asks if she can teach her how to have the same kind of power over Master Matthew.
Cato’s friend warns him.
Cats has been going around Philadelphia flashing his money and not being careful. His friend, Alex, is worried that he may get himself killed.
However, Cato thinks what he’s doing is helping the cause.
Elizabeth confronts Georgia about her true identity.
“I saw your papers. You’ve been passing. If you tell me what’s going on, I can help you.“ – Elizabeth
Apparently Georgia hasn’t been honest about who she really is. However, the word is out and her life is now in danger.
She starts to receives threats and her house is no longer safe for the movement.
Patty Cannon enlists August’s help.
Patty makes a deal with August: if he helps her catch Rosalee, he will be freed from prison. He agrees, as he wants revenge for his son.
Rosalee defends working with Harriet while being pregnant.
“I was thinking about this baby and when I realized I was carrying, I was already on the road with Moses learning so much. “ – Rosalee to Elizabeth
Rosalee is so driven to get her family back together, that she doesn’t want her pregnancy to stop her from looking for them.
Elizabeth warns her that she could lose her baby if she continues to go on runs and search for her family.
Ernestine helps Clara.
Ernestine agrees to help Clara gain power over their master, and she starts to help her master the art of seduction.
After Ernestine goes with her to give Master Matthew some food, Clara strikes up a friendly conversation with him about the horse.
Ernestine advises her to leave but come back for the basket later so she will give him time to miss her company.
The plan works, as Clara and the master begin an intimate relationship.
Ernestine tells Clara to get as close as she can to the master because it will be Ernestine’s way off the plantation.
Rosalee and Noah reunite.
Noah locates Rosalee at Georgia’s house and they have a passionate reunion.
She almost tells him she’s pregnant but instead tells him that she is going to go out to locate her mother and brother.
He isn’t confident about her plan.
Elizabeth urges Noah to talk Rosalee out of going after her family but after all he’s been through, he understands why locating family is a priority for Rosalee.
He doesn’t talk her out of it, despite Elizabeth’s urging.
Cato puts together a fundraiser event at his home to raise money to abolish slavery.
Patty and August show up to Cato’s fundraiser event at his home, and Patty brings up the fact that she was looking for him when he was on the run with the rest of the Macon 7.
Things get violent after Patty asks Rosalee’s location and they end up killing all of Cato’s men.
Cato breaks down and tells them they have to locate Ernestine to find Rosalee, and one of Patty’s men takes Devi away.
Patty has decided to stay at Cato’s house while her men look for Ernestine and Rosalee.
Ernestine’s boyfriend Hicks promises to change.
“You ain’t never raise a hand to me. You don’t even know me.” – Ernestine
Ernestine realizes that she hasn’t been her true self since she arrived to the South Carolina plantation.
Hicks apologizes and promises to never hit Ernestine again, but Ernestine wants to end the relationship.
To her, it’s clear it’s very toxic. She tells him their relationship is very typical. He gets abused by plantation overseers, and then comes home to abuse her. She takes it because she felt she deserved it, but as she becomes her old self, she is fully aware she deserves better.
He believes her relationship with Clara has changed her perception of him, but Ernestine isn’t really interested in debating with him.
He scolds her and tells her she will be back, and leaves her some more poison (opiates) knowing that Ernestine is currently going through withdrawal from the drug.
By the end of the episode, she’s back to inhaling the toxic substance to cope with her surroundings.
Elizabeth and Lucas are attacked.
They are ambushed in the woods, and men who have concealed their faces with bags tell her they will kill her if she continues to help slaves. Elizabeth doesn’t back down and tells them to do what they are going to do. They leave her tied to the tree.
After they leave, she begins to work on untying herself.
Noah proposes to Rosalee.
“My first choice as a free man is you.” – Noah to Rosalee
He gets on bended knee and proposes to Rosalee with the ring he made. She gets emotional and agrees to marry him.
By the end of the episode, they are shown leaving Georgia’s house to locate Rosalee’s family with Noah still unaware that she is pregnant.
What are your thoughts on the episode?
I’m worried about Cato and I wish Rosalee would just be honest with Noah and tell him she’s pregnant. I’m tired of her being so secretive about it.
I suspected Georgia was passing.
I wish Rosalee would just tell Noah she’s pregnant. He really needs to know asap.
Cato is fave. I hope he doesn’t get killed.
I thought everyone knew that Georgia was a free woman of color; I was surprised to find out they didn’t. Cato better not be dead!
