Jennifer Hudson & David Otunga Break Up + End Nine-Year Engagement (UPDATE)

Apparently Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga have ended their nine-year engagement.

According to TMZ, the former couple is preparing to duke it out in court over the custody of their son.

TMZ writes:

Jennifer Hudson and fiancé David Otunga have split after nearly 10 years — and Jennifer was granted a restraining order — but David’s attorney says it’s only because Hudson’s afraid to lose their kid.

Otunga’s attorney, Tracy Rizzo, tells us, “David Otunga has been trying to negotiate the terms of an amicable parenting agreement with Ms. Hudson for several weeks now. However, when it became apparent to Ms. Hudson that Mr. Otunga would be the parent granted residential care of the child, as a result of Mr. Otunga being the child’s primary caregiver while Ms. Hudson pursues her career all over the world, Ms. Hudson decided to file a meritless Petition for Order of Protection in an effort to gain an unfair advantage in the custody dispute.”

Rizzo continues, “As a result of Mr. Otunga’s career in the WWE, Ms. Hudson felt that she could give an award winning performance in court to portray herself as the victim. Mr. Otunga has never abused or harassed Ms. Hudson or their son.”

In a statement to People, Hudson’s rep says Jennifer requested the protective order, “in the best interest of their son.” The statement never accuses Otunga of getting physical with Hudson but we’re told Otunga wanted to make it clear, he never touched her.

UPDATE: TMZ is now reporting that Jenn is fearful that David will physically harm her:

Jennifer Hudson claims she’s in fear of baby daddy David Otunga — afraid he will physically harm her — something Otunga vigorously denies.

TMZ has obtained the order of protection Hudson got Thursday. She claims David has exhibited “aggressive, threatening and harassing behavior toward me.” She says, “I am now living in fear of further action David might take.”

She claims on Wednesday she was at a recording session in Chicago with their son, David Jr., and David made a series of phone calls to reach her. When he couldn’t get her, he asked their son to record the scene. Hudson says David wanted their son to show she was dating one of her producers … something she denies.

She says when she got home David was visibly angry, grabbed David Jr. by the hand and physically pushed Hudson out of the master suite. She claims their son, a makeup artist and an assistant all witnessed the incident.

She says this was just the most recent in a pattern of escalating and threatening behavior and she says she’s especially concerned because David is a 6’3″ 240 lb professional wrestler.

Hudson goes on to say in legal docs, on occasion David left a gun and holster on their kitchen counter. He said it was a movie prop, but Hudson says, “David knows that I am and have been very sensitive to firearms after my mother and my brother were murdered by a firearm.” She says, “I believe that he left it out to taunt, intimidate and frighten me, which he absolutely accomplished.”

As we reported, Hudson got an order of protection and got cops to remove David from the family home.

  1. This is why I side eye long engagements. Usually when people are engaged for damn near ten years, it’s because someone or both people have reservations about marrying their s/o. But they are too comfortable to end the relationship and stop wasting each other’s time.

  2. Well this lasted a lot longer than I thought it would. Hopefully they can do what’s right for their son and not let things get too nasty.

  3. Lots of accusations being tossed around. They need to remember that they do have a child together so they can’t be out here acting like fools. If the relationship is over, let it be over and co-parent like you have some damn sense.
