Amara had plenty to say during her recent interview with Hot 97.
Here are the highlights from the interview.
On her real issue with Young Hollywood, who told her on the show to be “less Macy Gray and more Beyonce,” she said:
It’s not that I felt bad about his comments because I’ve had to deal with it my whole life. So it wasn’t new. Ive had people tell me you need to change your hair, you’re too black to be Latina. Or you’re too Latina…there’s always an issue. But the true issue came when he started mocking me.
He started doing all of this (puts fist in the air), ‘You’re black and proud…whatever.’
Her interview with The Breakfast Club was also discussed (Charlamagne tried to invalidate Amara’s experiences with colorism by pointing out Cardi B’s success).
Ebro said the following about it:
It was bonkers to you see you sit face to face with someone who shared the same complexion as you in America when you was on with the Breakfast Club with Charlemagne and him bold face tell you to your face that it may be in your head.
Amara responded with the following:
If you think that I’m annoying, I just started. I‘m never going to get over it. I’m going to keep talking about it til I see a difference in the Latin community.
She also made it clear that she understands why Cardi B’s sister was quick to defend Cardi. As you may recall, Hennessy said when asked if she believes Cardi being light skinned has helped her succeed in the industry, Amara made a face that expressed she does.
Amara stated that she knows Cardi worked very hard to be successful, but she couldn’t understand why Charlamagne would bring up Cardi’s success to prove a point when she is not a dark skinned woman:
I just feel like she was just trying to be protective of her sister. They always have each other’s back which is a wonderful thing.
I don’t have any brothers. I don’t have any sisters. I don’t know how that feels but I imagine it’s a beautiful feeling to have someone who’s going to back you up the way she does, the way that they do for each other.
She specifically said the face that I put when I was doing the interview bothered her but to me it was like we’re talking about colorism and how hard it is for me and the struggle whatever, why bring up Cardi B when we’re talking about me or you know, dark skin…she’s a little bit lighter…so it was just like what does that have to do with anything?
I guess she took my expressions as a bad thing.

Amara is such a good person because I think would have dragged Cardi and her sister had they came at me the way they came at her.
Same. They deserved a dragging but she’s too nice to do it.

It’s so strange to me how bothered some people are about Amara speaking out on something that has been going on forever.
No one wants to admit their privilege. I would have been shocked if Cardi and her sister were like yeah Amara is so right. Colorism is terrible. Not gonna happen.
People don’t like when black women speak up. We see how they are doing Monique and I’ve already started to see some black women try to tear down Amara as well and calling her a fraud of dumb reasons like wearing afro extensions.
She has to deal with so much ignorance.
She’s gorgeous.
She’s wasting her time because all 3 (Cardi, Charlamagne and Hennessy) are ignorant. They will never understand what she has been trying to say because that would require maturity and humility.
Charlamagne knows what she is talking about, that is why he bleached his skin.
