‘Insecure’ Recap: Issa Comes Through For Daniel in the Clutch

Issa’s declined letters flow in.

The episode opens with Issa still on desk duty. She hasn’t seen or heard from Daniel in a few days, so she shoots him a text making sure he’s okay.

Meanwhile, she got an email from an apartment, declining her leasing application. Frustrated, she looks at apartment listings on her computer at work.

Daniel texts Issa back, saying, “Yeah, I’m straight. Thanks.”

This frustrates Issa, who contemplates sending Daniel a shady meme.

Her conscious catches her before she sends it.

Issa’s coworkers tell their boss the same things she told her about the logo.

In a staff meeting later in the day, Issa’s boss hears from Freida and the others that the logo for We Got Y’all is racist and insensitive. However, their boss insists she isn’t racist, and she just wants to help the community they’re serving.

Eventually, everyone turns to Issa for her response. She fantasizes telling everyone off, because she brought up the issue to the boss first. However, she meekly agrees with everyone’s sentiment, with their boss still in denial about everything.

Daniel’s friend sets up meet-up with Spyder.

After hanging out with his niece Jada, Spyder, who Daniel really wants in the studio isn’t coming. But his boy tells him to meet up with him at the club after his performance.

“Don’t worry about it. Ima be there. Don’t even trip.” – Seven

Kelly sets Issa straight about her finances.

Issa meets with Kelly to talk about why she keeps getting denied apartments. Kelly keeps it 100 about Issa’s 425 credit score.

“My credit score can’t be that bad.” – Issa

“Bad would be a step up. The basic credit tiers are excellent, good, poor, bad… This is Issa, at the bottom.” – Kelly

Despite pointing to the ground, demonstrating how terrible her score is, Kelly tells her a good savings account can help. Issa tells Kelly that she’s been saving, and Kelly busts her bubble by telling her she doesn’t have enough saved.

Issa’s disappointed in this, and tells Kelly’s she’s been working hard at multiple jobs, including driving a Lyft. Kelly tells Issa that she could pay 3-4 months of rent as a security deposit, or continue to stay with Daniel.

Kelly tells Issa she could give Daniel some extra cash, but Issa confirms she’s not paying him at all.

After joking with Issa, Kelly says she’s getting over on Daniel and needs to keep the good thing going.

“Don’t look a gift-horse in tha d***.” – Kelly

“That’s not a saying.” – Issa

“It is. My grandma told it to me.” – Kelly

When she leaves, she calls her brother to move in, but he’s growing weed in the room he offered her. She also calls a job prospect, which is a property manager position.

Meanwhile, Vanessa has Daniel over her place and he’s getting ready to go. He asks her to head to the club where Spyder’s performing. However, she calls the place played out and declines.

Issa’s told to be the face of black people at work.

The We Got Y’all team is having lunch at Simply Wholesome but Issa is eating her own lunch, after her conversation with Kelly.

They discuss yesterday’s meeting and how Joanne seemed tone-def according to Freida. Issa supports Freida. Her other co-workers bring up how Issa should’ve spoken up about it long ago.

“Really? I have to speak up about every issue? Do you know how awkward that is?” – Issa

“It is what it is,” according to her co-workers, which irritates Issa, because she feels she shouldn’t be the voice of all black people at work.

Issa volunteers as wing-woman for Daniel.

Back at work, Issa calls Daniel later. She picking up paper towels from Costco and tells him she needs more time to find her own place. But Daniel says his girl Vanessa doesn’t want her around.

So, Daniel tells Issa she has just another week or so. The call ends abruptly.

When off the phone she sees Joanne walking into her office.

Once in her office, Issa walks in to talk to Joanne. She tells Joanne that they need to hire more people of color to represent the community they’re serving.

Joanne says she’ll think about it.

At Daniel’s place, Issa cleans up, and hilariously deals with a spider behind a toaster. Daniel walked in and sees her cleaning, and re-organizing his cabinets. He gets openly frustrated when Seven flakes on him.

Issa offers to be Daniel’s wing-woman at the club and he accepts.

Issa’s connections come in handy.

When Daniel and Issa get to the club, they’re met by the door man. Daniel tells the door man he’s on the list, but the guy doesn’t see his name. At this point, their friend Kahlil walks up. Issa and Kahlil make small talk, and they all reminisce about rapping, making beats on the lunch tables in school.

Running into him pays off, because Kahlil gets Daniel and Issa in the club, one-step closer to pitching to Spyder.

Issa as a wing-woman really pays off.

Once inside the club, Spyder’s performing to a somewhat hype crowd. Daniel and Issa are heading to a small table. Daniel tells Issa he wants to work with Spyder and says he wants to hook him up with a more complex beat that fits his style.

While Spyder is performing, Danielle beat boxes in Issa’s ear. She tells him she loves the sound.

Issa then goes off to get a drink for them both. Kahlil heads off to a section in the club. At the bar, Issa takes off her shirt, revealing her blouse, capturing the attention of a guy at the bar. While at the table, two women approach Daniel.

Issa gets the hood dude to buy her two drinks. The ladies walk away from Daniel when he tells them he doesn’t sell weed anymore.

Daniel and Issa awkwardly drink their drinks paid for by the hood dude.

Later on, they are upstairs while Spyder’s in his section. Issa notices Daniels looking at Kahlil and Spyder partying in their section. She hypes up Daniel to head over their section and pitch to Spyder.

At the section, Issa distracts Kahlil, getting him to show off his four year-old son. This gives Daniel a chance to pitch to Spyder. Dropping Seven’s name didn’t work. But, when Kahlil says he knows Daniel, Spyder’s ears open up.

Spyder agrees to have Daniel come to the studio. When he sees Kahlil, he’ll have him call Daniel.

Things turn intense when dudes begin fighting and shooting in the club.

Daniel shields Issa as they take cover on the ground.

Daniel opens up to Issa.

Afterwards, Daniel and Issa are at Broly Hut eating. Daniel’s frustrated  that his career is not moving fast enough.

“But you worked with Ty Dolla Sign.” – Issa

“It didn’t make the album. Every time I feel like I’m about to get out of the staring blocks with this s***, just, like, nothin’.” – Daniel

Issa encourages him, telling him he’s good at what he does and has a passion for music. She notes that she doesn’t have a passion for anything.

“You’re good at what you do. And… at least you have a passion. Because, I sure as h** don’t.” – Issa

Daniel enjoys the conversation so much, he tells Issa she can stay as long as she needs to. When Issa asks inquires about Vanessa, Daniel tells her not to worry.

Fortunes may begin to change for Daniel and Issa.

At home, Issa sees footage of the two dudes fighting in the club, and shares it on Twitter.

Daniel also expresses jealously of Kahlil. But Issa says it would be smarter for Daniel to work with Kahlil instead of trying to compete against him.

So Daniel takes her advice and calls up Kahlil. They agree to meet up in the studio the next day.

Impressed with Issa’s advice, Daniel tells Issa he likes having her around.

Before he goes to bed, Daniel heads to Issa on the couch, who’s complaining of her neck soreness. He tells her she could sleep in his bed. He begins to rub her neck.

The episode ends with Issa getting a call back about the property management job she called about earlier. They want to interview her for the position.

She smiles at the end of the call, and heads over to Daniel’s computer to listen to his beats. They both smile and bob their heads to his work.
