Charley introduces Micah to Romero.
Micah stops by as well and Charley reluctantly introduces Romeo to Micah. Next, Charley tells Micah that the police caught the person who sent the threatening letters. She tells him that it was a single person and he wrote letters to others as well.
At the diner, Aunt Vi panics as she’s packing pies for Ralph Angel when she surprisingly snaps on her waitress Rhonda. After she apologizes, Ralph Angel stops by, coming through the back as Nova shows up as well. Aunt Vi has Rhonda tell Nova to leave.
Rhonda tells that Aunt Vi snapped on her and Nova knows that Aunt Vi’s projecting the anger she has for her on others.
Back at the farm, Ralph Angel hosts his first participants for the labor program he set up at the encouragement of his former parole officer. He tells them that the farm isn’t an office job and his goals are to make sure none of them make it back to prison.
The Landry Family’s sinister plans are revealed.
Charlie’s private-eye shows her plans to build a highway through the land of the black farmers, including Ralph Angel’s farm. They are also planning on having Jacob run for Councilwoman Barrera’s seat to help keep the council from fighting the plans.
Nova calls Ralph Angel to tell him that she’s leaving in a few days. Then, Nova’s publisher tells her that the NY Times review got Nova a national tour to promote the book, which will have her on the road for six weeks.
This news excites Nova.
Back at the diner, Aunt Vi apologizes to Rhonda, putting a smile on her face. Prosper’s in the diner but she freaks out, fearing Jimmy Dale returned.
Charley meets with Barrera to talk about Jacob running for the council when she learns Barrera is stepping down. In fact, Charley gets warned to not fight the Landry family over this, especially as they have Federal money backing them. So she goes to see Francis to confront her about everything.
Francis has ammo of her own to stop Charley in her tracks, referring to how she “conquered the NBA” and turned “an NBA player into an empire.”
However, this doesn’t phase Charley, who tells Francis she knows about Jacob running for the now-vacant council seat.
Darla’s at home with the gentlemen she’s dating and he’s setting up a record player for her. When he played music, they begin to slow dance. Meanwhile, Ralph Angel’s on the farm talking to Benny about things on the farm when Benny asks about what he read in the book.
Benny gives him props for raising Blue and tells him how his biological father wasn’t there for him.
Davis introduces Charley and Micah to his daughter Tia.
Charley and Micah are home when Davis shows up with his daughter. He surprises them both, introducing them to his daughter. Davis and Charley then talk, with Davis telling Charley he’s retiring from the NBA, taking a head coaching job at Bayou State.
Charley tells Davis that she’s not here to be a surrogate parent.
It’s the day of Nova’s book signing and during her speech, she reads a new part of the book she added at the last minute. The excerpt tells the story of how Ernest fighting for her daughter’s honor.
While fishing one day, Ernest clashed with two white men. They threatened to hurt Nova. Ernest began to worry about Nova’s safety on a daily basis.
This leads to Nova telling a story of how she saw her father burying something that could’ve been two bodies on the farm.
Darla confronts Nova.
During the signing, Chantal approaches and asks about the family and invites her out later, kissing her when Nova says she has plans. Meanwhile, Darla finally opens up her copy, reading the chapter about her.
Nova writes about how she found Darla with a john while Blue was in the corner of the room watching. She then storms to Nova’s place to confront her. She demands to know why Nova even told this story and tells her she stole her story from her and a chance to tell Blue on their own time.
Lastly, she warns Nova to not come around her or Blue ever again.
“You are lower than I ever was.” – Darla
That night, Micah returns home as Charley looks at pictures in Nova’s book. Micah tells her about Nova’s last chapter about Ernest. As this happens, Nova’s at home, looking at pictures and downs a glass of wine before picking up her phone to call her ex Chantal. Nova invites Chantal over but the call doesn’t go as planned. Instead, Chantal accuses Nova of being selfish. Nova decides to end the call and spend the night alone.
Aunt Vi gives details to exactly what Nova revealed about Ernest.
Charley brings Aunt Vi and Ralph Angel together to talk about Nova’s latest chapter and Aunt Vi reluctantly reveals something happened to the men that he fought at the bait shop.
“Do you have a right to know what’s in everyone soul? You don’t.” – Aunt Vi
However, she reveals that she believes Ernest carried a burden to his grave.
The night ends with Darla crying on Ralph Angel’s front porch over the book and Aunt Vi crying in the bathroom. The next morning, Nova’s still getting Ralph Angel and Charley’s voicemails as Charley drops off Micah to spend time with his sister and Davis.
