Actress and R&B singer Jill Scott is a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice, but when it comes to speaking her mind, there’s a fearlessness about her that just has to be respected. Frankly put, Jill says what she very well pleases, and doesn’t hold back or let being politically correct intimidate what she feels is sharing the truth to the masses. Jill was selected as the cover girl for the Mother’s Day issue of Ebony Magazine, and in the May issue, she opens up in the publication about single motherhood, and even talks about how why she feels she’s sexy and why the definition of sexy in her opinion is just about being your true self.

On single motherhood, Jill says the “I can do it by myself” mentality is nothing but a lie. She feels a woman cannot raise a child alone and needs a village to ensure that the child grows up and becomes the best person possible:

“That I-can-do-it-by-myself mentality is a lie. I’m sorry if I hurt anybody’s feelings, but you cannot do it all by yourself. You need a village: some aunties, grandmoms, friends. I couldn’t do this by myself and would be a fool to think I could.”

She even says raising a boy has been quite the challenge because she feels she can’t really teach him how to be a man:

“It’s challenging being a single mom … No matter what I do, I’ll never be a man. Ever. I can show Jett how to be a thinker, how to enjoy music or how to feel, and to conquer. But I cannot show him how to be a man.”

Jill also explains what she feels makes her sexy:

“The way I see things, I think that’s sexy. The way I think and the way I pray, I believe, are very sexy. I’ve never been the girl with too few clothes on. My mother told me, ‘It’s what you don’t do that makes you sexy more so than what you do.”

The May issue of Ebony Magazine hits newsstands on April 16.

  1. I have to agree with her on this one. While it’s honorable for single moms to attempt to be two parents in one, it’s just not possible. And it’s okay to not be a superhero and ask for some help. In fact, more should.

  2. She’s so right. Unfortunately, pride will keep many women from admitting this and they will mess up a child before they ask for help.

  3. It DOES take a village. Where we got this whole, I can do it by myself sh-t from I’ll never know. But no one can go at life alone, let alone parenthood. Be humble and get some help.

  4. True that growing around both parents being around it has a good impact more especially if the father wears trousers, sumtymz to you jst hav 2 b a mum and dad in other situations,n yooo da lil guy is sooo cute nt forgetting you u luking sooo beautiful jill.
