Robin Thicke sued by Marvin Gaye family? Robin Thicke might have gotten his first big hit with his single “Blurred Lines,” but with that kind of success also came legal troubles. Turns out legendary R&B singer Marvin Gaye’s family seems to think the song sounds a lot like Marvin’s song “Got to Give It Up” to come up with “Blurred Lines.”  And because of their feelings on the track; Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell Williams filed a lawsuit several weeks ago against the Gaye family to protect them from losing big in court if the Gaye family opted to move forward with a lawsuit. While all three artists say their lawsuit is a means to protect themselves and not for financial gain, Marvin Gaye’s son says he felt the move was “disrespectful.” But it looks like the Gaye family has decided to move forward with their lawsuit.

TMZ is reporting that two of Marvin Gaye’s children have filed a countersuit against Robin Thicke, and in the suit they claim that Robin changed the tune and origin of “Got to Give It Up.” Nona Gaye and Frankie Christian Gaye filed the paperwork earlier today, and they are pointing to Robin’s most recent interviews as proof that he stole their father’s music. Apparently he said in the interviews with GQ and Billboard that “Got to Give It Up” is his favorite song and he “wanted to make something like that, something with that groove.”

The suit filed by the two Gaye kids is a response to the suit Marvin, T.I. and Pharrell filed in August.

Marvin’s family is asking for damages and the profits for Robin’s hit song and they are even claiming that Robin’s track “Love After War” is a copy of Marvin’s “After the Dance.”

If Robin loses, he may have to cough up millions.

  1. I don’t think the song is a copy of Marvin’s. Pharrell is one of the top producers in the business and he would know better than to directly copy a song. Now they do sound similar but they are not alike. Marvin’ family really doesn’t have a case.

  2. They don’t have a case. Robin said he wanted to create something like it, and he did. You can’t sue someone for that because it’s not a direct copy. No case here.

  3. They need to leave Robin alone. The song is not a copy of Got to Give it up. Not at all. They should get out and get jobs and stop trying to sue people with frivolous lawsuits.

  4. Robin gets on my last nerve but Marvin’s fam doesn’t have a case. The song is not a copy even though it sounds similar. Making a song that sounds similar is not stealing. They need to have a seat and find a better way to make some money cause this ain’t going to work.

  5. Wow…they don’t sound alike at all. Their not even in the same key or similar gradulated sound. I understand that it has a similar vibe and that’s why I can respect the direction of his music but its sad that they are this serious of getting money this way.

  6. Totally off subject, but how are his kids’ last name “Gaye?” I mean, he added the e at the end for his own personal reasons growing up, but did he legally change his name? At this point I’m more concerned with that than this song. Yeah, they sound similar, but I don’t think it was stolen. *shrug* Back to that last name tho….
