As we reported recently, the American Music Awards decided it would give its first ever AMA Icon Award to Rihanna, so the 2013 awards was a big deal for the music artist. While the whole Twitter world ran to the social media website to talk about Rihanna’s wrap hairstyle, her fans were more excited to see their fave have yet another big moment in her music career. And things got emotional after Rihanna’s mom Monica Fenty presented her superstar daughter with the award.

Both gave some heartfelt speeches, but we have to say Rihanna’s mom took the cake as she made it quite clear how proud she is of her daughter. She says:

“Rihanna, I’m so proud of you tonight. I know the journey in your career has not always been an easy one. But tonight I applaud and admire you for being so strong and so positive, so humble, and so focused. I mean it’s amazing how you’re always able to take the good from your experiences. I’m so blessed to be a part of this historic moment. And I just want to say I’m proud to present to you the first ever AMA Icon Award.”

Rihanna started off her acceptance speech by jokingly reminding her mother how much she annoyed her when she first started showing signs she wanted to be a singer. But she says the day her mother decided she would support her dream was all the encouragement she needed to pursue her career:

“About 20 years ago is about when I just started making your life a living hell with my annoying little husky, man voice you’d call it. And I mean just disrupting the entire neighborhood. West Berry Road, Barbados, they can tell you. That’s the truth. I annoyed every one of my neighbors. And ten years later I was blessed enough to meet Evan and Carl and I was working with them, actually I auditioned for them at 15. And my mom came and she was just looking at us like you’re in a school uniform, you still have some stuff to finish to think about doing this. And I literally begged and pleaded and she finally said yes. And I thank you, and we all thank you for that yes because that was the beginning of it all.”

Rihanna also took a moment to express her love for all of her fans and her amazement at getting the award at such a young age:

“My fans I love you so much. You have no idea. You keep me driven. You keep this thing special. And right now I can’t believe at 25 years old that I’m holding an Icon Award. That is weird to even say out loud.”

Congrats again to Rihanna. Check out the videos of her performing “Diamond,” and the acceptance speech below:

  1. I am so proud of Rihanna. She’s not perfect, but she is a real person and I believe that why she has so many fans and she has had so much success. I love the relationship she has with her mom and us the fans! She always makes us feel like we’re important to her and that we’re family. Please believe she has more awards to win! Love you Rih!

      1. You’ve never seen an artist treat their fans like this?! Bey treats her fans like her own family, but most of the navy always discredit it,saying that she does that for the cameras just cause your own fave treats you like sh-t. But you are easily impressed by a shoutout. Only the navy

        1. No actually I’m impressed by a woman who will buy her fans tickets when they tell her they’re too broke to afford to see her on Instagram. I’m impressed by a woman who sits and talks to us like we’re normal human beings on Instagram, and kicks it with us backstage just because. I’m also impressed by a woman who stands up for us when someone comes for us. I don’t have an issue with Beyonce honestly, but don’t discredit Rihanna’s love for her fans because she doesn’t do everything like Bey. If you ever want to see how humble Rihanna is, follow her on Instagram. She’s a real person and she loves her fans.

          1. Thank you. Bey does her thing boo, just don’t act like Rihanna doesn’t love her Navy because then you’d be a liar.

  2. I still can’t believe she walked out the house with a doobie wrap. And the pins! But watch all the girls start doing it now. LOL.

  3. Rihanna is a real female. She walked out the house like most women wish they could, with a damn wrap in their head. You have to have confidence to pull that off. Say what you want about her, but she deserved this award. She’s done things in a short few years that took other artist like a decade. Give her the props she deserves.

      1. I never was a Rih hater. My first trip to this blog was from Twitter for a Rihanna post. Been here ever since because the commentators are cool chicks and they don’t curse you out on here for the most part for having a different opinion. That’s rare on these blogs. You can see on all my comments on here and see that I’m Navy all day everyday. I just called you out that one time because you were taking shots at the rest of the UB fam. We all may not agree when it comes to Rih and Bey, but we’re all fam. BTW, no beef. I think you fit right in. 🙂

        1. “I just called you out that one time because you were taking shots at the rest of the UB fam” <~~ I respect that…
No blog feelings, Everything is cool 🙂

    1. OK! Any Rihanna post good or bad and the hate is thick on here! I think she deserved this. She is an icon of her time. No one can deny that she has influenced music in a big way

  4. That was very sweet, but I can’t get with her hairstyle. It was inappropriate to receive that award and then not care enough to even do her hair…however her make up looked nice, so for one event I chose to ignore it I guess…
