Nicki Minaj caught a lot of flak for her “Anaconda” music video, and plenty of critics felt the video was way too raunchy and sexual in nature.

Some even felt the video was a bad example for young women but Nicki says the video was actually about a woman’s power.

She tells GQ:

“At first I’m being sexual with the banana, and then it’s like, ‘Ha-ha, no.’

“Yeah, that was important for us to show in the kitchen scene, because it’s always about the female taking back the power, and if you want to be flirty and funny that’s fine, but always keeping the power and the control in everything.”

In related news, TMZ is reporting that Nicki Minaj and her on and off again boyfriend Safaree have once again called off their romance, and he’s even removed one of his Nicki tattoos.

    1. You may be right but a woman should be able to express herself as she sees fit sexually. I think that’s Nicki’s point here.

  1. The video wasn’t my favorite and I don’t really care for the song, but I think women should be able to do what they want creatively. That is power. If she wants to show her butt, make it clap, etc. in her videos, that’s her right.

  2. My God, smh why do some woman feel twerking and having an over size a** equates to woman power? So she trying to say using your body is all the power you need to make it? You can be sexually creative in so many other different ways….. pathetic

  3. I definitely do not think that the video was about women’s empowerment. However, I do feel that a woman should be able to express her sexuality and creativity. We all know society has different standards for men and women. Let’s not act like men haven’t objectified women in videos far worse than Anaconda. It was a bit too raunchy for my liking, but to each his own. I’m off my soap box.

  4. Why are some people so outraged about what a grown woman does with her body? It’s creepy. Her being raunchy in a music video isn’t going to ruin your life. Calm down and ask yourself why you don’t police a man’s body or sexual image as much.

  5. Because it’s Nicki a lot of people will side eye this and drag her but the point is a woman having a choice to do what she wants with her body is power. We can be classy, we can be raunchy. We can be virgins, we can sleep with multiple partners. We can dress like church ladies or we can dress like Kim Kardashian. It’s our right to choose. I’d love to understand why so many women equate a woman’s naked body, bog booty/breasts or sexuality to weakness and trashiness. Our bodies are beautiful. There is nothing wrong with our bodies. Sexuality isn’t a bad thing either. We all got here by our parents having sex. So why some of y’all grow up to hate it so much and anything that reminds you of it makes no sense. Let that woman be. Y’all definitely don’t go this hard on men.

  6. It was a controversial video that got her lots of attention. Nothing more, nothing less. But I support women being able to choose their own image, no matter how sexual it may be.

  7. I didn’t see the classic definition of “empowerment” in the actual components of the video, but in the fact that she is able to do it at all. Less than 45 years ago, a woman couldn’t even have her own bank account, so the mere fact that we’re now at the point where she is able to have a video showing her cheeks clapping at all, shows how far women’s liberation has come. Now based on the controversial comments, and the fact that had it been a man we wouldn’t even be having this conversation, says how much further we have to go.

Nicki’s video wasn’t my cup of tea, but neither was Rihanna’s Pour It Up for many people, and I loved that one!

  8. I love Nicki but let’s not pretend she didn’t make this video for attention. I agree with her on the control issue though.

  9. I think she needs to stop tryna cute-sy it up….u wanted to shake your a$$ rub on your boobies and be appealing and enticing to men….I believe ALL women do that. The song grew on me. The video was over the top for me….but I still shake my a-s and don’t give much thought…,u really aren’t suppose to.
