Weeks ago Nicki Minaj and Taylor Swift got into an awkward Twitter beef after Nicki expressed she felt she didn’t get enough VMA nominations for “Anaconda.”

Nicki seemed to hint that she felt her race and body type kept her from racking up nominations, and the whole situation sparked a huge debate on social media.

In the end, Taylor backed off and apologized but Miley Cyrus has some words for Nicki in her new interview with the New York Times:

What did you make of the Nicki Minaj controversy around the V.M.A.s — that she was upset “Anaconda” wasn’t nominated for Video of the Year?

I saw that. I didn’t really get into it. I know there was some beef. I don’t really know. There’s a way to talk to people …

Do you know what she said?

She was saying that everyone was white and blonde that got nominated, I heard? And then Taylor Swift butted in.

She may have alluded to “Wrecking Ball” also, saying that when a naked white girl breaks a Vevo record she gets nominated.

I didn’t follow it. You know what I always say? Not that this is jealousy, but jealousy does the opposite of what you want it to — that’s a yoga mantra. People forget that the choices that they make and how they treat people in life affect you in a really big way. If you do things with an open heart and you come at things with love, you would be heard and I would respect your statement. But I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it.

And it’s not anger like, “Guys, I’m frustrated about some things that are a bigger issue.”

You made it about you. Not to sound like a b*tch, but that’s like, “Eh, I didn’t get my V.M.A.”

But she was ——

If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself. Say: “This is the reason why I think it’s important to be nominated. There’s girls everywhere with this body type.”

I think she did say that ——

What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite. I think there’s a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don’t have to start this pop star against pop star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn’t even on what you wanted it to be about. Now you’ve just given E! News “Catfight! Taylor and Nicki Go at It.”

I know you can make it seem like, Oh I just don’t understand because I’m a white pop star. I know the statistics. I know what’s going on in the world. But to be honest, I don’t think MTV did that on purpose.

    1. I don’t think so ‘ angry black women’ doesn’t apply here due to the fact that Nicki has been shown demonstrating nasty and rude behavior. Also, what ever happened to being humble.

      1. Sorry, I’m not about to sit up here and side with a white woman who has mocked black women and black culture to get away from her Disney image. You can though. And lastly, you fit right in with systematic racism. They tell us that blacks must be meek and stay in our places at all times. Anytime we show pride or speak up we’re labeled rude and angry. How is Nicki’s attitude any more rude, cocky and snotty than Miley’s and Iggy’s? Anyway, I’m done. I can see what I’m dealing with here.

      2. Humble? Miley ain’t humble either but what does that have to do with Nicki calmly speaking out about racism in the music industry?!!!!!!!! The tweets she tweeted that started all this weren’t even nasty or angry!!!!!!

        1. Well Nicki never pointed out race she mentioned body type being in favor of curvy women when its a well known fact that she is quite petite given her love for the plastic

          1. Wrong again!!!!! I suggest you read all of her tweets as well as the ones she just tweeted on her account. She just thanked Complex for demonstrating why the VMAs is racist. You’re trying to sound intelligent in this conversation but you don’t even know what you’re talking about. Nicki definitely tweeted about racism as well as body shaming!!!!!

          2. You’re a liar. Nicki tweeted about racism in the music industry and even wrote about how unfair it was for Jay Z to get dragged for Tidal and Taylor Swift praised for going off on Apple Music. Just say you don’t like Nicki and call it a day. Everyone can see through your BS.

  1. Miley needs to stop pretending like she’s so positive when she’s talked so much trash about other artists. Her opinion isn’t valued.

  2. F-ck this culture appropriating big teethed b-tch. I may not be a Nicki fan but I’m not here for these fake privileged b-tches talking out the sides of their necks and calling us angry when we call out racism.

  3. Ladies and gentlemen this is what white privilege sounds like. Miley doesn’t get it and doesn’t understand it because she is a privileged white woman. Now she trying to say Nicki was being mean and angry no Nicki was being real welcome to a black woman’s reality sweetheart we don’t have a level playing field and Nicki was just highlighting that. Furthermore Nicki never called out anybody but MTV it was Taylor Swift who inserted herself into it.

  4. Huh? Did Miley really not get it at all? I guess it’s easier to be dumb than to admit you get to live off white privilege. Now I see why Beyonce never reacts or says anything. It’s like high school. The popular white girls will eat you alive if you call out the obvious.

  5. I stopped reading at this:

“But I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it.”

Really? Nicki was not angry at all when she tweeted what she did. Anytime ignorant white people like Miley hate to hear us speak on racism, they pull the black people are angry card. It’s so ignorant. There was nothing angry about those tweets. But Miley sure was “angry” when she made those “rude” comments about Sinead O’Connor.

  6. I don’t like Nicki but I don’t like Miley much more. I can’t stand it when white women try to call black women rude and angry. It’s racial 99.9% of the time.

  7. Some white people and uncle toms can’t stand cocky black folks. They also don’t like for you to have a backbone and speak up for yourself either. Nicki responds to some trolls on Instagram and now all of a sudden she’s rude, but not the people who trolled her.
