Meagan Good Talks Wanting to Be Taken More Seriously as an Actress

Meagan Good says Viola Davis’ Emmys speech was such a big deal to her because it made her feel like people were starting to take her more seriously as an actress, and she was no longer just eye candy.

She tells the LA Sentinel:

“I cried. It meant so much to me to be acknowledged by someone like Viola who I have so much respect for. We all face challenges in this business especially as black women. It’s been a really long crawl for me to transition from being a child actress to an adult actress; in addition to being in that sex kitten role in my early 20s and fighting to be taken more seriously. It’s been a really long journey and to hear her say my name really blessed me. To listen to her journey and to know what she’s gone through to be acknowledged for the great actress that she is…it’s all of our struggles to get out of the box that people always try to put us in.

“It’s an incredible time for women and minorities in TV and film. There’s been a massive shift that we’ve all been patiently waiting for. I’m a big believer in not complaining about the things that are wrong. Instead I place my energy into being on the front line of change, having a positive attitude and fighting to see things shift. To be in Hollywood right now and have these opportunities as the shift is coming is incredible.”

  1. That’s how it is when you’re gorgeous. Halle went through the same thing so she eventually had to go for better roles that showcased her acting range. I see Meagan is trying to do that now.

  2. When you’re beautiful like she is some people will try to downplay your talent. But she also has been typecast for a long time first as the kid actress and then as a s-x kitten role. Not only is Megan beautiful but imo she has this s-x appeal to her its like she just oozes s-x appeal rihanna has that same kind of appeal too. So I can see that being a gift and a curse she just has to keep pushing.

  3. I’d be really interested in seeing her play a serious role. Hopefully she gets the opportunities she’s looking for.

  4. well I am happy for her too. I’ve been her fun always. I really liked her in jumping the broom with the CHEF “Its burrrrrning !!!!!!

  5. Good for her! I think attractive women have this issue in most career fields. Glad she’s coming in to her own. Maybe she should consider avoiding those roles now and only go after the more serious roles to truly showcase her talent.
