J. Cole dropped “False Prophets” the other day, and the lyrics caused a lot of debates on social media.
For one, J. Cole’s lyrics about a rapper with a huge ego who hasn’t made good music in years just made many suspect he was referring to Kanye West.
He also rapped about looking up to peers only to learn they aren’t even writing their own lyrics, a reference many thought was about Drake.
And then there was a reference about a peer he considers a friend who is depressed because he doesn’t feel he gets enough respect or success. Folks suspected Cole was referring to Wale.
Now Wale has responded with his own track, “Groundhog Day.”
In the track, Wale admits J. Cole was completely right about him but “False Prophets” was the motivation he needed at just the right time.
And just to be clear, Wale wanted fans to know he’s still on good terms with J. Cole and he uploaded video of them at a game together:

Love this.
I like how Wale did this. He didn’t throw shade or throw some tantrum on Twitter. And he didn’t throw jabs either. He just got in the studio and proved just why so many of us feel he’s underrated and not appreciated enough.
These are some of his best verses ever.
I’m glad they aren’t beefing. I like them both.
I really enjoyed this.
Now I wonder if Drake and Ye will respond.
Nice. Now this is what Hip Hop is about. I hope others are paying attention.
A real friend will tell you about yourself and real friend will listen. I love this.
