Kiki and Micah are sent off by family to prom.
The entire family is together, including Nova. Charley is sending Kiki and Micah off to prom and everyone is joining them. Nova also toasts the couple for their college decisions. Kiki is staying close to home, going to Tulane. Meanwhile, Micah was accepted to Harvard.
When Kiki and Micah head off, Charley reminisces about Micah as a young child and the upcoming Town Hall debate for the city council candidates. Eventually, Hollywood and Aunt Vi leave, leaving Charley and Nova behind. Nova gives Charley ammo to use at the town hall against Jacob, who called Charley earlier. Ralph Angel brought Blue to Deesha’s for a play date with Joie. He also apologizes to Deesha about missing their date.
At a rehearsal for the debate, Nova grills her about potential reactions from Jacob or the crowd. Nova coaches Charley to use some of the info from the lineage book regarding the Boudreauxs and Landry family. In personal news, Charley’s happy to hear about Calvin coming to town to visit Nova. A reconciliation could be in the works.
When Nova gets home, Calvin arrives with birthday balloons and a basket of fruit just as she finishes preparing for his arrival. Calvin has reservations at her favorite restaurant and presents her with a shiny new necklace. He las another gift for her that he keeps for a surprise. Nova isn’t sure what this could be. However, a storm rolls over which causes them to change their plans. Meanwhile, Kiki and Micah meet up with their friends. The storm knocks out their power.
Charley and Jacob are trapped in the diner.
Jacob’s intrudes on Charley practicing at the diner to deliver news about the election. He tells Charley that his victory is a foregone conclusion, reminding her Frances set everything in motion. In fact, Frances feels things are personal with Charley and wants to bankrupt her family. Charley brushes this off but just as she decides to leave, the storm hits the diner trapping them inside.
Aunt Vi and Hollywood ended up driving out in the storm and safely made it home. Hollywood was hoping to ride his motorcycle with Aunt Vi riding with him. But the mood changes when Aunt Vi plays music on their stereo and they begin to dance. It’s a romantic moment for the happy couple.
Back at the hotel, Kiki has plenty on her mind. Micah tries to lighten the mood by asking her to dance. However, this doesn’t help soothe her nerves about everything. She’s hesitant about her losing her v*rginity and Micah seems okay with it. They all get notifications that flooding from the storm canceled their prom.
At Joie’s, Ralph Angel reveals to Deesha that he’s been going to see Darla for a few weeks now since she relapsed. As a result of this, he realized he’s still in love with Darla. Deesha respects his wishes and emphasizes with him. Although it seems like the end of a romantic relationship, it doesn’t take away from their friendship. She wishes him the best with Darla. And she plans to make sure that Blue won’t lose his new friend even though she’s no longer dating Ralph Angel.
Charley reveals key details to Jacob.
Back at the diner, Charley continues her conversation with Jacob. She brings up Frances. And this leads to an argument. During the intense moment, Charley plays back the recording of Frances’ racist insults to Jacob.
“Still want to talk about how you were raised?” – Charley
This gets Jacob’s attention and Charley opens up about his family’s racist past and present. Jacob asks how he could be better and Charley suggests he drops out of the race. However, Jacob insists he can’t drop out due to the family ties. Instead, he suggests he makes himself unelectable and Charley agrees. She shows him an album that Nova gave her.
At their home, Aunt Vi is bathing Hollywood. Hollywood expresses thoughts of following through on his goal of creating a support group for black men in St. Joseph. They come up with the name “The Real Spot” for the venue. Meanwhile, Ralph Angel drove through the storm to Darla, bringing her some chicken soup. Darla’s still recovering from her relapse, taking time off work.
Ralph Angel tells Darla Blue’s been asking about her. She asks for a little more time before seeing him again. As this happens, Calvin and Nova’s date is still going on. She opens up to Calvin about her feelings about their breakup. She felt like she wasn’t in control at the time and that hurt her. She also reveals that she’s also afraid of commitment and Calvin is convinced it’s just because of distance. He suggests with a kiss that they take distance out of the equation.
Micah, Kiki and their friends are in their hotel room talking about their futures. They have goals of Grammys, opening a chain of urgent care clinics and opening up law firms and bail bonds. Kiki’s envisioning showing off her art in NY and DC. However, Micah doesn’t have plans.
After their lovemaking, Calvin reveals to Nova that he’s moving to New Orleans to be closer to her. He also asks to make things serious with Nova and she agrees. It’s clear they want to make a greater effort to make things work.
Darla and Ralph Angel still have romantic feelings for one another.
Lastly, as Darla and Ralph Angel eat their soup, Darla thanks him for keeping her company and taking care of her. She then leans in for a hug and he obliges. She asks him why he’s looking after her. He says he has to for his own peace of mind. Ralph Angel feels anger behind what happened to Darla and never wants to see her suffer again. They also to reveal to one another they still love each other. She asks him to forgive her enough to go back to being together. He wants this, too.
The next day, Charley gets Jacob to speak out about the racist practices at Landry Enterprises. As a result, he pulled out to the debate and called for an audit at the company. He also revealed his great-grandmother is black and part of the Bordelon family. Charley hopes the move would only anger Frances even more and force black voters to turn to her. Regardless. Charley’s ready for what’s coming next.
