‘Queen Sugar’ Recap: Darla and Ralph Angel Make a Tough Choice + Nova Learns a Dark Secret

Blue learns of his acceptance to attend Sidewell Acadmy.

The episode begins with Blue looking for his history packet. He stumbles into the home office and finds his acceptance letter. He’s happy about the acceptance and asks Ralph Angel if he’s going to school there, saying it sounds awesome.

Darla and Ralph Angel sit Blue down and explain that he would have to move away from them to DC, which sours Blue’s mood on the topic.

Meanwhile, Davis is fixing the glass on Charley’s back door he broke to get into the house. Charley, who’s doing better, hears Davis hammering plywood covering the glass. They reminisce about their past and she notices the groceries Davis bought her. She thanks Davis for his help.

Hollywood’s on the computer working on his invite for The Real Spot virtual meet. He’s nervous about the invite but Aunt Vi gives him encouraging words. Next, Aunt Vi hears from Hollywood that she should call Ralph Angel if she’s going to still meddle in business about Blue.

Micah and Nova give Ralph Angel advice.

Meanwhile, Nova calls Ralph Angel to talk about Blue getting into the school. Ralph Angel tells her Blue isn’t going and she’s glad. Nova says he only got accepted because he’s Black and gifted. Ralph Angel appreciates the support.

Aunt Vi calls Ralph Angel about Blue. She’s relieved to hear Ralph Angel isn’t accepting Darlene’s offer. Hollywood listens on as Aunt Vi tells Ralph Angel that Blue will be just fine with them in St. Joe.

Charley’s still recovering when Davis brings a lunch. They watch a game show and talk about Charley suggesting Davis hid his intelligence from his fans. When he leaves to make the sandwich, Charley offers to come and help.

Calvin FaceTimes Nova while he’s at the Capital. His security company is on a high-profile assignment and he’s going to be there for a few days.

Micah gets a call from Ralph Angel while he’s in Minneapolis protesting. Ralph Angel tells Micah about the school for Blue and Miah’s excited. But when she hears Darla isn’t into the offer, Micah tells him the school could open doors for Blue. Micah also says that although it has its cons, Blue having Sidwell on his resume would be helpful. He also tells Ralph Angel that his parents gave him the choice to pick his college and picked what he felt was best for him.

Blue’s reminded of Chadwick Boseman’s passing.

The next day, Blue’s in his room doing homework when Ralph Angel brings him a Black Panther toy. It makes Blue happy at first then sad when he remembers Chadwick Boseman passed away. Blue tells Ralph Angel he’ll keep it in the box as a collector’s item.

Nova has a call with a former journalist about her next story; Andre Dixon’s beating at the hands of New Orleans police. Andre’s family didn’t talk to authorities out of fear of retribution.

Meanwhile, Davis is getting down in the kitchen with Charley watching. Micah was interviewed by national news about the protests in Minneapolis and they’re proud. They were worried about Micah becoming a spoiled brat but they are grateful to see the Man Micah’s becoming.

Darla and Ralph Angel have a change of heart.

Back at the farm, Ralph Angel listens in as Blue tells his classmate he wants to be a farmer like his father. After hearing this, he heads into the kitchen to talk to Darla.

Later that night, Darla and Ralph Angel are outside with Blue awaiting a meteor shower. While waiting, Blue tells them he had a dream where he was an astronaut and president. Ralph Angel asks Blue if he really wants to be a farmer and he’s been thinking about the Sidwell school. Blue’s been thinking about it too and he’s willing to go even if it means being away from his parents. Blue then gets a hug from his mom as Ralph Angel sheds a tear.

Charley and Davis are eating dinner when Ralph Angel gets a call about a family meeting. Davis reminds her that she didn’t tell anyone she contracted Covid. He reminds Charley that she needs to continue to rest but her toughness and willingness to fight this alone is a strength, and Charley is taken aback by the words.

Meanwhile, Nova returned home to hear about the meeting and ends up accidentally breaking a portrait frame of her and Calvin. Andre Nixon then returns her call.

Aunt Vi and Ralph Angel clash.

Eventually, Ralph Angel and Darla call everyone together to have Blue deliver the news. Blue tells them about his acceptance into Sidewell. This news shocks everyone and Aunt Vi texts, Ralph Angel, saying that they need to talk.

After the meeting, Aunt Vi calls and she lays in on him. However, Ralph Angel stands up to her and he tells Aunt Vi that Blue isn’t her son. Before the conversation ends, Aunt Vi says that his father would be ashamed of him.

Finally, Davis’ getting ready to leave and Charley thanks him once again for interrupting his life to help her. But Davis says this wasn’t an interruption and he’ll always be around to help her.

Nova meets with Andre and he’s a quadriplegic as a result of the incident. Andre explains his story of how he was caught stealing rims with his friends. The police took him and his friends behinds the alley where they beat him so badly, they injured his spine. Nova’s shocked to learn Calvin was the one who delivered the final blow to his back that changed his life forever.

A shocked Nova breaks down in tears.
