On the series premiere of “Raising Kanan,” fans of the “Power” Universe finally get a look at the impactful moments that made one of the coldest characters just who he was at the core. Kanan’s mother Raq got into the drug game after meeting her boyfriend High Post. And she wanted Kanan to be tough since he was just a child. So when he got beat up by neighborhood boys, she made him go back to the place of violence and beat them down.
When Kanan entered high school, Raq wanted him to stay focused on his education and get out of Southside Jamaica, Queens. He was fine with this plan and enjoyed his time with his friends and cousin Jukebox. However, once Raq’s street dealings get them all shot at, Kanan decides he must do whatever possible to keep Raq safe. This leads to him making a decision he can never come back from.
Now Raq must teach Kanan what he needs to do to stay safe. And her own brothers aren’t so sure that she will be successful in protecting him from the streets.
