Lil Wayne dropped out of high school because of his mom? Rapper Lil Wayne isn’t a stranger to controversy. In fact, the Young Money Records head honcho and star of Cash Money Records is always catching backlash for his lyrics and speaking his mind no matter how politically incorrect his views may be to most people. Interestingly enough, Lil Wayne caught major backlash after he decided to reference Emmett Till on Future’s “Karate Chop” remix while simultaneously bragging on his bedroom skills. Emmett Till’s family didn’t take the lyric lying down and eventually their pressing of the issue led to Mountain Dew dropping the artist and he lost out on millions of dollars from the lost endorsement. Lil Wayne did eventually apologize to the Till family during one of his recent performances and he’s showing a more humble side these days considering he even apologized to his fans for not putting out his best work as of late.

Just days after taking shots at Lil Kim’s altered face, Lil Wayne gave an interview for Katie Couric’s daytime talk show. In the interview, Weezy opened up about dropping out of high school and even his bouts with seizures and syrup. Interestingly enough, the rapper actually revealed that it was his own mother who made him drop out of high school. After saying he doesn’t regret dropping out of high school and his kids will not take the same route, he says:

“But my mom. It was my mom’s idea. I had an album out. I was platinum already, thank God. I was still trying to go to regular public school, and she saw me getting ready for school one day, and she was walking past the room, and…she was talking on the phone with someone, just talkin’ loud, and she saw me putting my gun in my backpack. And she said, ‘You gotta bring that to school with you?’ And I remember asking, ‘You don’t want me to bring it?’ And she thought about it, she said, ‘I do.’ So I put it back in my bag, and she said, ‘You’re right. Bring it.’ Because she bought it for me for protection. She was like, ‘You do need it.’ She was still on the phone, it wasn’t two minutes later, she walked back to my room, she said, ‘You don’t go to school no more. You gettin’ a GED,’ and I was like, ‘Okay.'”

Lil Wayne says his mom felt he needed to drop out of school and get his GED if he felt the need to keep a gun in his backpack:

“She was like, ‘If that’s the way you gotta go to school, you on TV right now, tell Baby and them, get you your GED.’ So I went and got a GED, and I went to college.”

The full interview airs on Monday, September 9. Check out the clip below:

  1. I can only hope his kids won’t take the same path he did. It’s sad he lived in the kind of environment where his own mom bought him a gun.

  2. Well at least he wants better for his own kids. And he did get a GED and go to college. My real issue with Lil Wayne is how much he makes a fool of our race. That Emmett Till thing was just low down.

    1. Wayne is lying. Plain & simple. She didn’t even allow him to curse early in his career. She was strict. He just wants to build up his “rapper” portfolio. Shame on him for using his mom to portray himself as a thug. But folks from the boot like myself laugh at him when he talks like this. Thugs don’t go to McMain lol! Very smart & gifted but thug….no

  3. He’s from the projects. His mom understood he needed to be able to protect himself. He still turned out more successful than most.

  4. This could have ended up very differently for Lil Wayne. At least he understands his kids cannot go down the same road.

  5. Lol! I went to school with Wayne & his BM Toya. It is true that when he was going to Abramson, he had a hit record at that time and he had people hating on him. His mom did make him drop out but the gun part seems off to me because if you listen to his earlier raps, Wayne couldn’t even curse his mom was so strict….Poor Toya use to get in fights all the time with girls Wayne was cheating on her with. Once she got jumped by some chicks while she was pregnant with Reginae…Wayne stood there & watched. The entire football team wanted to beat his a-s & u can bet he left school early that day! I don’t know about the gun part. I will say its possible going to the school we went to, but Wayne is not now nor was he ever a thug. He needs to stop
