Rihanna had a big night at the 2013 American Music Awards, but most people were talking more about her hairstyle of choice for the evening than her actually receiving the first ever Icon Award. The singer rocked an actual doobie wrap with jeweled pins for the occasion, and many were so shocked she rocked the look on the red carpet that they took to social media in droves to talk about it. Rihanna doesn’t seem to care too much that some felt the look was inappropriate and somewhat lazy because she even rocked her wrap when she kicked it with Drake the other day in Los Angeles as she attended his concert and partied with him at a nightclub.

Rihanna’s hair stylist is speaking out about the controversial new hairstyle Rihanna is sporting just about everywhere as of late and she says that despite the backlash, she wasn’t being lazy by rocking the wrap out at a formal event, she was actually trying to make a bold fashion statement.

Ursula Stephen chatted it up with Elle Magazine and she defended her client’s look at the AMAs.

On whose idea it was for Rihanna to rock the doobie wrap:

“It was actually Rihanna’s idea. She had her mind made up! Honestly, I was a little hesitant but I knew she could pull it off, so I was all for it.”

On if it’s possible that the doobie wrap as a hairstyle could become a huge trend:

“Sure. I mean, it’s already been done. I see girls on the street rocking them all the time shopping, eating, etc. It’s just never been seen in a formal setting.”

Ursula also says that despite the popular belief that Rihanna wore a wrap to the award show because she was nonchalant about receiving the award, the singer was actually just making a bold fashion statement:

“It was a nod to fashion! This is a style that can be worn by some of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood.”

On criticism that the wrap should only be worn in the bedroom:

“Everyone has an opinion. However, the doobie has been worn to Bergdorf Goodman. They just haven’t been paying attention. And it’s been around since the ’30s. Part of my job is to know eras, trends and fashion, and to keep looks alive by adding a modern twist.”

  1. Well Rihanna got a lot of attention with this “hairstyle.” No matter how weird it is to us, I wouldn’t be surprised if people started wearing it out more. I won’t do it, but to each its own.

  2. Rihanna is a trendsetter. She will without a doubt have a lot of women out here rocking doobie wraps. I can guarantee it. Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. LOL. I just can’t get with it and I love fashion. There’s no way to make it look stylish to me. I see it and I automatically think someone was too lazy to do their hair.

  4. i wore the doobie wrap, i flat iron and wrap my hair from the salon , but when am ready to go out i unwrap that sh-t
