“Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas” hit the theaters on Friday, and although the filmmaker has a large following that usually comes out in droves to see his films across the country, the first weekend numbers show that his latest film may have struggled in comparison to the others.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the film amassed only $16.2 million in its opening weekend, meaning it fell below the studio’s expectations. The movie cost around $25 million to produce, so studio heads at Lionsgate were hoping it would draw that amount in its first weekend.
$16.2 million makes this the lowest start ever for Tyler Perry’s “Madea” films and the second lowest start ever for a film produced by the famous movie producer (his other film “Daddy’s Little Girls” opened with only $11.2 million).
The previous “Madea” film entitled “Madea’s Witness Protection” had a strong opening weekend of around $25.1 million last year.
There’s still some hope that the movie can improve its numbers in the upcoming week considering it got the CinemaScore of a A- which means it should continue to perform strongly throughout the Holiday season.
The latest “Madea” film came in at the number three spot this week at the box office.
I think even his own fans may be getting tired of Madea. But his Single Moms Club movie should do well.
It didn’t look all that great to me in the previews, but then again I never liked any of his Madea movies.
It’s time for him to retire Madea and focus on making better movies.
There’s better movies out here right now.
It’s getting stale.
It should pick up this weekend and around the Holiday. I’m personally waiting on Anchorman 2 to come out. I need a good laugh.
The trailers sucked.
