Newlywed Gabrielle Union is staying busy now more than ever now that she’s ben producing movies for Lifetime, while still nabbing big screen roles and starring in BET’s “Being Mary Jane.” But in a new interview, she wants to make it clear that she’s still her own woman and she didn’t marry Dwyane Wade for status.

On being proud of signing a prenup, she tells Yahoo Style:

“For women in Hollywood, when they’re coupling, everything is about the brand. Everything is about latching on to a rising star, so you can kick your heels up. That’s never been my story, ever. I make sure to let people know all of the hard work that’s gone into my career. I want people to know the work that it took to get through UCLA, that I had student loans and worked. I was eating Top Ramen and lived well below my means. Now that it’s time to get married to a man who happens to play basketball and has done well for himself, I want to make it clear that I have in no way hitched my wagon to his star. I have my own wagon and star.”

And while most of us are excited about “Being Mary Jane” returning to BET next month, the beautiful actress now admits that she did view her character as a home wrecker last season:

“I think initially she is a home wrecker. He was dishonest. He started a relationship under false pretenses [by not telling her he was married], but I think she became a bit morally bankrupt on the way. That narrative is important to tell, which is why I was all for the story line. It shows what happens and all of the people who are affected in an affair. I look at it as a morality tale.”

And as far as the “Scandal” comparisons, Gabby says stop it:

“What bugs me is that they’re making the comparison because they’re both shows that star black women. It’s such apples and oranges. It’s like comparing True Detective and Law & Order — you would never do that. What it says is we need so much more diversity in TV. We need shows starring women of color or women of a certain age or women who aren’t a size 2. If that happens, the world isn’t going to end.”

  1. I agree with her about the Scandal thing. It’s like every single time we get a new black show some people feel the need to compare them and pit these black actors against each other. I can’t stand it.

  2. I don’t think she married D Wade for the money but she did marry him for the status of being married to a NBA player.

  3. I think she really does love Wade but I’m not sure why. You can tell in her interviews that she’s extremely intelligent. Wade – not so much.

  4. After I heard her story, especially after the rape, I was 100% in her corner. But man, everytime she opens her mouth nowadays, even when she’s right, she just irritates me.
