Taraji P. Henson Explains Why Cookie Lyon Isn’t a Caricature

Taraji P. Henson and Viola Davis are featured in the latest issue of Elle Magazine, and both get candid about how hard it can be for black actresses.

Interestingly enough, Taraji admits she works hard to make sure Cookie is a character people take seriously and not one most view as a caricature.

She says:

“It was very important to me that she not be sassy and neck-rollin’ and eye-bulgin’ and attitude all the time. Everything she does is coming from a place of fighting for her family. That’s why she’s not a caricature.”

  1. Cookie is a caricature. I think Taraji knows this deep down inside and she spilled that tea during her drunk acceptance speech. But I still love her though.

  2. Anything female character written and endorsed by Lee Daniels is a caricature. He saved his best writing for Jamal. Go figure.

  3. Yeah , Cookie is a caricature , certainly .TP’s speech was CLASSIC lolz , I love how upfront and real she is . However , everything her character entails is a stereotype of the black woman .

  4. Now she knows she’s full of sh-t. Cookie is the biggest caricature on the whole show. But people don’t mind that sh-t because she’s funny and entertaining.
