The Grammys Call out Lauryn Hill

Lauryn was reportedly scheduled to perform with The Weeknd, but Grammys executives are claiming she arrived too late for the performance.

Rolling Stone writes:

“It’s a disappointment to us and a disappointment to her,” Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said of the missing Hill after the Grammys (via USA Today). “Our intention was, and we were ready, right up to the moment of the performance, for her to step up on stage.”

In a statement issued during the Grammys, Hill’s rep explained, “The Grammys announced a performance by Ms. Lauryn Hill prematurely and without approval. Ms. Hill had concerts all weekend, leaving no time to prepare, and was uncertain she would even be able to make it to LA in time to rehearse for the event, Any performance that could have happened was never confirmed, and should not have been advertised as such. Ms. Hill was invited to do a collaboration with an artist she appreciates. The performance was intended to be a surprise and unfortunately due to its last minute nature, was unable to come to fruition.”

However, Portnow dismissed that claim. “None of that statement is accurate,” he said, adding that Hill attended rehearsals Monday morning. “She was there for it, completed it and left the building. And then she did not get back in time to make the show. I’m sorry, that’s the bottom line. That’s the truth. That’s unfortunate. I guess those things happen.”

A Grammy rep told TV Line that the notoriously tardy Hill “showed up during rehearsals, but arrived too late for the performance.”

In related news, Rihanna also had to cancel her Grammy performance. The singer was diagnosed with bronchitis and urged to cancel by her doctor.

  1. I really believe Lauryn is over music and would walk away forever if she didn’t need the money. She’s been through a lot and the industry isn’t something she wants anything to do with.

  2. This is such a mess. I love Lauryn but she has to do better. She has a contract to honor so in the meantime, she has to take her obligations seriously. If not, I can see her label adding to her debts and suing her down the line.

  3. You are given a chance to perform at the Grammys after that long then you bail out? It’s obviously the Academy still believes in her talent for them to invite her. Do better Lauryn.. We were all rooting for you

  4. I wish Lauryn would get her sh-t together. There’s always an excuse for why she doesn’t show up to her own sh-t.

  5. I don’t understand why she thinks one good album gives her the right to be unprofessional and pretentious. Even us non celebs understand we have to show up to our jobs on time.
