Charley gets tea on the officer who assaulted Micah.

The season begins with Charley running along the Mississippi River. A man honks at her from his car, shouting out their parish. Eventually, she ends up at her new, sprawling home.

She comes in and grills Micah about his college counselors. She then hugs and kisses him, saying he’s college bound.

When Micah leaves, Vicky texts her saying, “I have something for you.”

Nova is offered a book deal.

Nova is meeting with publishers. They are willing to offer  6-figures for a publishing deal. She also meets her potential editor that wants to get to know her.

Nova says she was grounded in her community and the “grassroots.” The publisher thinks Nova’s voice can go global. They ask her to say “yes,” but she just smiles.

Ralph Angel is trying get Blue ready for school but Blue doesn’t want to go. Blue has been acting out at school and isn’t interested it seems after Darla left. He notices a box RA is sending back to her.

Charley meets with Jacob and Sam Landry ready to sign paperwork. But Sam excuses Jacob away from the room. Sam is salty Charley’s lawyers gave her 1% ownership of his operations to her.

“Who would have guess you and me would have ended up here… partners? Your daddy would be so proud.” – Sam

Charley pauses as she signs the contract.

The family prepares for their high school’s rivalry game.

Nova stops by Aunt Vi’s place with two bottles of liquor, happy to see her. Aunt Vi came back from a vacation in Italy. Hollywood is out prepping for their game party. They celebrate Nova’s book offer but Nova isn’t sure she’ll take it.

Next, Nova tells Charley about the offer and Charley reminds her of Nova’s admiration of Ida B Wells. Meanwhile, Micah is taking candid pictures of the family.

“Lead with the strength of who you are,” Charley tells Nova.

Nova nods in agreement.

The family huddles around the TV to watch Saint Jo play their rival school. Hollywood and Aunt Vi also talk about their wedding plans.

Later on, Ralph Angel asks Charley if she signed the contract, referring to the deal she set up with Landry. Charley reveals she did and she’ll use that to look into the books of the company, digging for any dirt she can find.

Eventually, the family arrives at the gym for the game. Inside, Prosper runs into Aunt Vi. He’s using a walking stick now and Aunt Vi asks him about his appointment.

Blue runs off when Aunt Vi and Charley go get concessions and RA goes after him. While in line for food, Charley recognizes officer Orson from the video she received. She sparks up a conversation with Orson, whose grandson plays from the rival school. A child with him sparks conversation with Blue.

They all arrive back to their seats and Charley spots Remy in the crowd. Micah is talking photos of the players, cheerleaders and everyone on the crowd.

St. Joseph’s stage a protest during the national anthem.

The game is set to begin and everyone but Nova stands for the national anthem. While someone sings, 5 black students dressed in black walked in front of he woman singing the national anthem, taking a knee. The rival school gets rowdy, booing the fans. A few in the back display the confederate flag in retaliation.

But security gets the kids out-of-the-way and things appear to calm down.

The game ends with St. Joseph easily beating Collins High 58-32. Afterwords, Micah tells Charley he’s hanging out with friends, and Nova goes to celebrate. Ralph Angel puts Blue in the car and is stopped by a woman who knows he and Darla aren’t together.

She hits on him, telling him he needs someone to keep the other side of his bed warm at night. But he seems to ignore her advance.

“You got my number.” – The Woman

Micah is outside and comes across the protesters. They exchange a head nod but overall ignore him.

Nova is at a bar and Nova overhears St. Joseph’s fans complaining about the protest at the game. She chastises them, telling them the protesters suffered heckling and drinks thrown at them.

Charley runs into Remy after the game.

Next, Aunt Vi notices Remy at the bar and tells Charley they need to stop ignoring one another. Charley obliges and heads over to him inviting him over to the table.

Charley tells them that what happened between them shouldn’t be held against her family. However, Remy still has no interest in being cordial. When Remy walks away, Jacob surprises her at the bar.

“Feels bad having a little secret like ours, huh? Feels dirty…” – Jacob

Charley brushes him off, but Remy notices the two talking at the bar.

Ralph Angel is in his home office working when he hears banging and rustling. He tells Blue he’s supposed to be in bed and Blue screams out he is.

Darla FaceTimes RA and he immediately passes the phone to Blue, ignoring Darla’s plead to talk. She talks to Blue. He asks her, “When are you coming to get me?”

“I know baby, I miss you so much.” – Darla

Blue tells Darla, “I want you to come home.”

Charley gets another video of the officer, and she leaks it out.

Hollywood and Vi are getting ready for bed and Hollywood’s frustrated at Vi not taking his hand earlier at the game as she walked down the bleachers. Aunt Vi tells him he doesn’t need him to be ultra-protective.

“Ima always pick you up. And I will always protect you.” – Hollywood

“I ain’t gonna break.” – Aunt Vi

They then hug and embrace.

Charley is at home when she gets another video. Micah wasn’t the only person assaulted by the officer. In this video, Charley sees him brutally beating up a black man, kicking him on the grown in front of his police car.

She tells her contact Vicky to “leak it.” Charley calls Micah but gets his voice mail. While she’s calling him, Micah walks in.

Keke calls, interrupting her digging into him.

Nova talks to the protesters from the game at Aunt Vi’s restaurant. They are looking to give voices to those that have been beaten by police in the county. They are all proud of the video views their protest received.

Ralph Angel learns about Blue’s paternity, and it breaks him.

It’s the moment Ralph Angel’s been waiting for. He’s with his sisters at the DNA office. A woman walks out with his test results and hands them to him. He opens it and reads the results, nodding in agreement.

“It don’t change nothing.” – Ralph Angel

Charley and Nova come over to hug him as he tears up.

“It don’t change nothing.” – Ralph Angel

Back on the farm, Prosper walks over to Charley sitting out in the field. They make small talk and Prosper tells Charley he needs back surgery. As a result, he won’t be much help this growing season.

“Daddy wasn’t able to farm the land by himself. Ralph Angel trying to prove he can.” – Charley

Charley tells Prosper they’re thankful to have him around. She then promises that she will take care of the Landrys.

Prosper says, “I know.”

The episode ends with Ralph Angel on the porch drinking a beer in despair. A car pulls up and Tamika (the woman from the game) gets out. He tells her, “We ain’t going inside.”

  1. Ralph Angel is always crying and sulking. Yes, Darla messed up but that happened when she was on drugs. He needs to grow up and forgive her for the sake of their child. He doesn’t have to be with her but treating her like trash is not going unnoticed by Blue.

  2. I love that Charley is always playing chess. While I feel sorry for Ralph Angel, I actually feel even worse for Darla. By being honest, she kind of lost everything again. Had she kept the paternity of Blue to herself, she’d be getting married still and accepted by the Bordelons. It sucks when doing the right thing will still cost you.

    1. Don’t forget she also lost her job too because Charley fired her after it came out that Ralph may not be Blue’s daddy. She wasted no time either. Savage. LOL.

  3. Darla needs to continue to look at the man in the mirror… SO! What! RA made the right decision, yes she was on drugs, but damn! Hollywood rescued the Blue while Darla was doing a trick with Blue RIGHT next to her, Blue was so thirsty, he was drinking the mans sweat! (Wood said it) Darla got what Darla got!

Love Charley playing chess! she gonna get the Landrys!

Love Hollywood!! GREAT BROTHA MAN portrayal!! Love Aunt Vi!! I love the cast Really great!!

Deondre T Whitfiled surprised me!! good job!

  4. I like Darla. She worked her a-s off to get her life together but see how quickly RA and all them abandoned her. It’s nuts to me because all of them have issues too.

    1. Ding ding ding! Ralph Angel was so controlling and selfish when he was with Darla that he cost her that first job she had. I know he’s fine but he wasn’t the best boyfriend/fiancé. It’s honestly for the best they stay broken up. Darla needs stable people in her life outside of Ralph and his family anyway. Especially since their support comes with stipulations.

  5. Unpopular opinion but Nova has the most boring storyline on the show. Last season she spent the whole time trying to figure out if she liked old dude or didn’t like old dude just to have another fling with that married cop in the end. Now she will spend the whole season trying to figure out if she will or won’t do this book deal. Boring!

  6. If a man doesn’t even want to f–k you in his house, you didn’t play your cards right.

  7. Why won’t Vi let Hollywood love her the way she deserves? It’s like she’s afraid of being vulnerable like she’s not allowed to be. She’s allowed to be human and delicate with her man. I hope she realizes that soon.
