‘Queen Sugar’ Recap: Davis Reveals Another Secret + Darla Takes a Stand

Ralph Angel gives Darla the cold shoulder.

The episode opens inside of Ralph Angel’s home. Ralph Angel and Darla are sitting across from one another silently. A happy Blue breaks the silence, running to Darla showing her letters he’s been writing to Ernest. He’s presenting them at the bonfire ceremony for his grandfather, but Darla can’t make it to the ceremony.

When Blue runs off to get crayons, RA asks how long she will be in town. Darla says she’s staying.

“How is that supposed to work?” – Ralph Angel

“As long as Blue is in St. Joe, I will be in St. Joe. I will be in my son’s life, doing whatever it takes to make it work.” – Darla

Prosper has an important doctor’s appointment.

Aunt Vi is at the High Heaven calling Charley about Prosper’s doctor appointment. No one else is available to take him, especially since Nova is preparing for their father’s memorial service. Aunt Vi tells Charley that she would know if she and Nova were talking.

When Aunt Vi hangs up, Charley goes back to writing her letter to Ernest. Meanwhile, Nova is working on her book idea.

She writes on a post it note “What am I doing?”

Back at the Senior Center, Aunt Vi gets a call from Nova. Nova needs some Aunt Vi wisdom about what to write her book about. But Aunt Vi says she’s the only writer she knows from St. Joe’s. So that makes her special. The call gets cut short when Ms. Neffie comes in. She tells Aunt Vi that her time will be cut short because there’s a group that comes in on Wednesdays that will need the space. Although Vi reminds Neffie that they agreed she could have the space until 5pm, Neffie tells her she must wrap up by 4pm. This frustrates Vi.

Charley still wants information on Jacob, but can’t find it.

Charley meets with her private investigator. The PI tells her about the percentages of what the Landry members owe in the company. Sam’s son, who owns about 10 percent is a lawyer in Houston and has a mistress. However, they can’t find any dirt on Jacob.

This doesn’t deter Charley from looking, as she knows how dirty that family can be.

“This family’s dirty. I seen it.” – Charley

At night, Darla puts Blue to bed. When she sees Ralph Angel, she tells him she notices plastic under his sheets. RA tells her that he’s been wetting the bed since she left. Darla feels disappointed no one told him.

But Ralph Angel flips the script on her, telling her that Blue hadn’t want to celebrate his birthday. They decided to do a bonfire to celebrate their father instead. He then gets angry at Darla for not telling him she was coming.

“You should’ve told me you were coming.” – Ralph Angel

“You wouldn’t listen.” – Darla

Charley and Prosper bond.

Its time for Prosper to head to his doctor’s appointment and Charley is ready to take him. However, Prosper doesn’t have his paperwork together. Claire would handle all of it, according to Prosper.

As he’s scrambling for the paperwork, Charley comes across Prosper’s trumpet. Prosper says Ernest would catch him playing in the French Quarter frequently.

As they talk, Charley suggests that they reschedule the appointment so she can help find the paper work. Prosper apologizes for not having everything together.

Hollywood proposes to buy a delivery truck for Aunt Vi.

At the grocery, Hollywood is helping Aunt Vi deliver the pies. While he’s helping, he tells her she needs a delivery truck and he may buy it for her.

Aunt Vi has another spell from her sickness. However, she isn’t deterred by it. She still shoots down Hollywood’s idea.

Ralph is at dinner with Darla and Blue. Darla still insists on going on the field trip. Ralph tells Darla no, she can’t go and Darla puts her foot down.

“I shouldn’t have to ask permission to spend time with my son. Our son. I’m still his mom. Nothing’s changed.” – Darla

Ralph Angel replies, “Everything changed, Darla.”

Remy and Nova run across one another on the farm. They exchange somewhat awkward pleasantries. Remy will be meeting his class on the farm for an assignment.

Davis stops by Charley’s place for a moment. He makes small talk, commenting on the house and Charley notices something just isn’t right. Despite that, Charley sees them off.

At Aunt Vi’s, Hollywood is showing her a used delivery truck he can fix up for her pie business. She says that he doesn’t want him doing this, but he insists. Things pause when Aunt Vi says she doesn’t want to owe anyone. She reminds him how her ex held things he gave her, over her head.

Hollywood says he saw Ernest work himself into the ground. He refuses to sit back and watch Vi suffer the same fate.

Remy learns a secret about Ernest from Nova.

Back at the farm, Remy is with his class. He tells them that only .03% of farms are owned by black farmers. However, his students are interested in becoming farmers, changing that trend. While in front of the students, a black female student asks Nova if she works on the farm. Nova says she doesn’t.

“Farming’s my brother’s calling. I have my own calling.” – Nova

Davis and Micah are hanging at the arcade, playing games. As they are playing, Davis gets a call.

Meanwhile, Charley finally has Prosper heading to the doctor. As they head to the car, Charley runs back to get his jacket. Once inside, she notices photos of Ernest and Proper when they were younger on the farm. Charley then notices a 30-day notice. The Landry corporation terminated Prosper’s lease.

Nova is still on the farm and in her father’s shed. Remy stops by and she gives him Ernest’s tackle box. She tells them a story of how her dad was attacked by three white men at a gas station.

Nova says she was angry, but her dad wanted to still make her feel special.

“He just wanted me to feel special, like nothing ever happened.” – Nova

She then says she stopped fishing after that incident. All Remy could do is apologize.

Prosper opens up about his land eviction, Davis drops a bomb.

Charley is with Prosper at the hospital. It’s revealed Prosper needs surgery. Charley uses this moment to bring up the eviction notice. Prosper says he’s been leasing it for years and Sam let them stay in the house.

“I’d appreciate it if you kept this to yourself.” – Prosper

When Prosper is called back, Charley runs into the man she met out the other night. She apologizes for not calling, saying it’s been crazy. He accepts the apology and says his offer still stands.

When they leave the arcade, Davis tells Micah that Ernest meant so much to him. Davis revealed how Ernest treated him like a son.

“He treated me like a son more than my own father.” – Davis

Micah is shocked when Davis reveals that Micah has a sister. His sister is 13 and her mom recently passed away. Micah asks if he knew about her the whole time, and Davis says yes.

Davis wants Micah to meet his sister, and Charley doesn’t know about her. Angry, Micah gets out of the car and walks away.

Jacob gives Charley some hard truths about the evictions.

Charley storms into a restaurant, demanding answers from Jacob about the evictions. Jacob tells them the Environmental Protection Agency is forcing the Landry’s hand. Apparently, the hurricane washed mercury into the ground water on the farms, damaging the land.

He also tells them they’re paying the farmers $5,000, but Charley says that’s not enough. Jacob also tells her that her name is associated with the Landry company. He tells Charley he wants to fix this and she’s involved either way.

“You’re a part of this too now.” – Jacob

Charley reluctantly joins him at the restaurant table.

Nova and Ralph Angel reveal more to Blue about their mom.

Blue is with Nova and Ralph Angel, asking about their mom. Nova tells Blue he’s sleeping in her old bedroom and her mom would play with her toys. He then asked how she died and Ralph Angel says she got sick.

“Do you miss her?” – Blue

“Everyday.” – Nova

“I miss ‘em both.” – Ralph Angel

Blue also reveals that he’s going to tell grandpa thanks for bringing Darla back around. This startles Nova and Ralph Angel.

Everyone delivers their messages to Ernest at the bonfire.

At the bonfire, Aunt Vi is giving a speech honoring Ernest. She tells how they would do this bonfire with Ernest as kids before Christmas. Aunt Vi then tells everyone how Ernest said Bonfires were a stairway to heaven.

Ernest also passed down the tradition of their bonfire to Blue, placing in messages for deceased loved ones. Blue then tells everyone to add their messages to Ernest to the bonfire.

Blue then tells everyone to place their letters into the bonfire. Micah goes first, telling Ernest he wished to have more time with him. Micah is next seen in his room watching old interviews of Davis with him and Charley.

Nova tells Ernest their story will live on. She then is seen with her board with themes she is going to use in her book.

Aunt Vi tells Ernest thank you for taking care of her. She then tells Hollywood she will accept his offer to buy the delivery truck.

Ralph Angel tells Ernest and his mother that he will raise Blue in their name. He’s then in the kitchen looking at the family tree Blue drew, and taking his name off the permission slip for the field trip to the aqaurium. He added Darla’s name instead.

Finally, Charley’s letter to Ernest reads:

“Dear Daddy, I will take care of him.”

  1. I’m not feeling Ralph Angel getting with the Asian chick next week. I may be in the minority but I want him with Darla.

    1. They would f-ck up Nova’s character if they did that. That’s some soap opera sh-t anyway. Bad writing.

  2. Davis just cannot get it together. Each time I think it’s some growth with him, I regret being so naive later. Of course he has a secret kid. Why would he not? He’s such a dog. Anyway, Charley needs to give that doctor a shot. But I have a feeling she’s going to end up with Jacob smh.

  3. I can see from the preview for next week that I’m going to be really irritated. For one, Ralph Angel is moving on from Darla way too fast. He was just engaged a few weeks ago. Take a minute to reflect and be single dude. And I feel so bad for Micah. He really can’t catch a break between the craziness from both of his parents plus that terrible encounter with the cop. I hope he doesn’t have a breakdown.

  4. Don’t tell me yall are surprised Nova is about to creep with her sister’s ex boyfriend. Remember she was sleeping with a married man when the show first started. That’s why I roll my eyes at her when she tries to be the moral police with Charley and Darla. She’s a hypocrite and hides her messiness behind her activism. She’s such an annoying character.
