VH1 made a lot of people nervous when the network confirmed that it was putting together a biopic for legendary R&B girl group TLC. Although people were initially bothered that rapper Lil Mama nabbed the role of the group’s rapper Left Eye, according to most of the reviews we’ve read so far, most can agree that she knocked it out the park. The movie itself is getting lots of praise from loyal fans of the group, but it looks like VH1 might have won in more ways than one. According to multiple reports, the movie actually broke records for the network.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms a total of 4.5 million viewers turned in to watch the small screen film on the trio, and it was huge hit on Twitter considering it amassed about 2 million tweets. It was the most tweeted about TV program of the day.

This makes the movie the highest-rated cable movie this year, excluding BET’s “Being Mary Jane” pilot, which of course starred Gabrielle Union.

The movie also makes history since it’s officially VH1’s strongest performing original to date.

T-Boz took to her Twitter account to thank all the fans for helping the movie become a success and she also thanked Lil Mama, Drew Sidora and Keke Palmer for nailing their roles. She tweets:

These girls did THAT! Thank you 4 doing such a great job portraying us!

YOU ALL HELPED MAKE THIS POSSIBLE! THANK U!

Congrats to TLC and VH1.

  1. Hopefully this will show other networks that they should make more films and shows catered to African Americans.

  2. I’m starting to wonder if they could make a movie for the theaters. Lord knows they have enough fans that would come out and support it.

  3. I want to watch this again lmbo. It’s like my love for TLC was renewed last night. I’m go glad I go to grow up in a time where our girl groups had substance.
