Tracee Ellis Ross Considering Appearing on Less Episodes of ‘Black-ish’ over Salary?

There’s no doubt that “Black-ish” is a smash hit for ABC.

In fact, it’s received many awards and nominations with Tracee Ellis Ross receiving a Golden Globe for her role as Dr. Rainbow Johnson.

However, it’s being reported that she’s making significantly less than Anthony Anderson, who also happens to be an Executive Producer of the show.

It’s also being said that she may appear in less episodes as a result, so she can supplement her income with another role on another show.

The Hollywood Reporter writes:

In the past, it would have been a major faux pas for Chastain to publicly comment on another actress’ salary, especially before it had been published. But that’s what happened thanks to a recent Time’s Up meeting. According to a source who attended, the Wahlberg-Williams discrepancy was discussed at length, as was Tracee Ellis Ross getting paid significantly less than her Black-ish co-star Anthony Anderson.

With negotiations for the fifth season ongoing, sources say Ellis Ross feels that if she isn’t brought up to Anderson’s level, she may opt to appear in fewer episodes to make up the disparity by guesting on another show. The tactic has split opinions within Time’s Up, with some worried that it’s more a retreat than a forward-looking solution (fitting in extra work isn’t always feasible, and often an actress wouldn’t earn as much guesting as she would as a network star). A network source says a new deal will significantly increase her compensation and cautioned that Anderson and Ellis Ross’ roles aren’t equal given that he has been attached to Black-ish from the start and is an executive producer. Still, until a few weeks ago, this type of candid conversation would never have taken place outside an actress’ agency.

  1. Ugh I hate it when black women get involved in white feminist movements. They don’t give a damn about black women. Anyway, they should give her a raise. But if she’s not a producer like Anthony is, they shouldn’t make the same amount. If she wants that kind of money, she should try to produce some episodes too.

  2. If Tracee isn’t a producer, she can’t demand to make the same salary as one. But a raise is fair since her character is so loved and she won a Golden Globe. To me that is fair.

  3. I think black women need to first understand how important strong negotiation skills are. Always negotiate! Don’t take a salary you aren’t happy with just to get on if it’s something you’re not ok with. Speak up early!
