Los Angeles’ new rap sensation Kendrick Lamar is enjoying the success of his current album, “good kid, m.A.A.d city,” his debut album on TDE/Aftermath/Interscope. His first single off the album “Swimming Pools” is a smash hit, and Kendrick’s fan base continues to expand as many can appreciate the young rapper’s lyrics of substance over dope beats. The enthusiasm for the rapper was made even more clear at a recent concert in his hometown of Los Angeles just one day before his album dropped.

Kendrick Lamar fans didn’t know what to expect when the “Swimming Pools” rapper tweeted that he would be performing a secret show on the corners of 12th and Figueroa in downtown Los Angeles – directly across the street from the Staples Center, home court for the Los Angeles Lakers. In no time, a massive crowd had spilled into the streets, exceeding the limits allowed by the city. After performing a few songs, the police dispersed the crowd and local news cameras showed up to report on the crowd.

In an exclusive interview with Yahoo!, Kendrick explains why he wanted to do the surprise (and free) concert for his fans. He says:

“I wanted to do something special . . . that actually made a point, made a statement. Better to do it in our hometown, right after the Laker game. I’ve never done a surprise show like this.”
