Jadakiss Defends Chief Keef Collaboration

Jadakiss feels like rappers shouldn’t be snobbish about their collaborations because it hurts the Hip Hop culture.

He tells Noisey:

“See the thing about that is some people are, like, why are ‘Kiss and Chief Keef doing music together. Because that’s what the culture is for! Like, to blend what he does with what I do and make a beautiful entree. As opposed to saying, nah, I rap like this, and he rap like that, we can’t rap like this. You put the mindset out there, and it screws up the culture, when you’re supposed to do songs with everybody.

“You get screwed up sometimes. Especially when money gets involved, everybody gets a nice couple dollars, your ego’s big now, you don’t want to answer for certain people, it’s got to be the top five dudes on the Billboard, those are the only people you want a feature with, and this and that. Then it becomes corny. That ain’t what music is for. It’s to make good music and represent the culture and keep going. You start, you start putting a bad mindset out there it just travels, and keeps going, and it becomes bad for everybody. That’s why Top Five Dead or Alive is going to null and void all of that nonsense.”

  1. I mean this is how Jay Z thinks too. You can’t stay relevant if you refuse to work with younger artists. That’s why Jay and Kiss are known to the youngins….they don’t discriminate. As long as you cut the check, they will meet you in the studio lol.

  2. I can’t say I had an issue with this collaboration, primarily because I barely ever listened to the song. The only gripe I have with Chief Keef overall is the life he appears to promote. I work with a lot of adolescent boys that love his music and other artists like him, and they find substance abuse and violence to be admirable – which is largely attributed to what they listen to. I am a firm believer that artists don’t raise children – parents do. However, all children aren’t afforded that luxury, and for some, the music they listen to contributes to the path they take, especially when it’s in line with their environment. I say all that to say, that would be my only issue with Jada working with him, not because he’s a “better” artist…

  3. It’s not about feeling superior. It’s about not rewarding lackluster talent. If more of our talented rappers/singers had higher standards about who they worked with, it would force people to start taking their music more seriously.

    1. I couldn’t have said it any better. Back in the day you had to work hard for a cosign. It was considered an honor to have a legend do a feature with you. Now popularity is all it takes. And Hip Hop has suffered greatly for it. There’s really no motivation to be dope anymore.
