‘Dear White People’ Season Two Spoilers & Discussion

“Dear White People” is back for its second season.

Here are the highlights.

Sam finds an enemy in an online troll who manages to break her down once they show her that even her parents aren’t off-limits.

As Sam comes to terms with the fact that words can hurt, Lionel discovers that the racist online troll is actually someone close to him, Silvio.

Lionel is devastated to find out Silvio is a racist creep hoping to energize fellow racists on campus. But, he does find a bright spot in a new romance with Wesley, another student. He loses his V Card but ultimately learns Wesley doesn’t believe in monogamy (poor Lionel).

But he and Sam’s desire to find out if there’s really a black secret society on the campus makes it hard for Lionel to truly focus on finding love anyway. Yet the death of her father brings Sam closer to her ex Gabe. They reconcile and seemingly get back together before the season ends. She also gets support from Coco and Joelle who go back home with her for the funeral.

Reggie has PTSD from the on campus security guard pulling a gun on him. After things go nowhere with Sam romantically, he realizes the best woman for him is actually Joelle. Sam walks in on them getting busy. But she gives Joelle and Reggie her blessing, despite sleeping with Reggie in season one.

Coco has to make a hard decision when she learns she is pregnant with Troy’s baby. After she daydreams about what her future would be if she kept the baby, she goes forward with terminating the pregnancy. The only person she trusts with this secret is her roommate Kelsey.

Troy has no idea that Coco was even pregnant, but he spends the majority of the season trying to find himself. After lots of weed and shrooms, he realizes that he doesn’t want to be who his father wants him to be. So he takes a chance at standup comedy. Troy also connects with other students who can help him with all of his future career aspirations.

The season ends with Sam and Lionel finding out that not only is there a black secret society on campus. But, the secret organization is interested in them both.

Also, Sam decides she done doing her radio show, “Dear White People,” after she sees what she can become after a black alt right talking head makes an appearance on campus.

What are your thoughts on season two? What are your favorite moments?

    1. Me too. She’s so beautiful. I don’t like that Reggie only wanted her after Sam didn’t want him.

    2. True but I think they make it seem that way to touch on colorism in the black community. Like Joelle and Sam are both beautiful but a lot of the black male characters only see Sam.

    1. I started to piece it together. It became clear that whoever was behind the account was around Sam and Lionel often.

  1. Coco is my favorite character. I know it’s messed up to say but I’m glad she had an abortion. I didn’t want her to go out like a stereotype.

    1. She made a choice. Either she was going to go after her dreams or have to live vicariously through her child. That was deep.

  2. I loved the season. Lionel is my fav, followed by Troy. I’m also glad Joelle got her own episode.

  3. I was worried this season would be blah but I enjoyed it. Coco continues to be my girl and I think Joelle needed to hear what that hotep said about Sam. She is not a number two. And she needed to know that.

  4. The only thing I didn’t care for was the ending. I expected more because of the buildup. But I think season three should be great now that they know there really is a black secret society.
