More hurdles present themselves as Issa continues to work on her block party.

Issa is going by black owned restaurants to see if any of the owners want to donate food to her upcoming block party.

It’s not going well. The owners don’t see how the event can benefit them, and one seems to think Issa is a homeless person.

In addition to looking for restaurants to partner with, Issa is also looking for local music artists to perform. One guy questions if there will be any “b*tches” there.

“Just one b*tch.” – Issa

Out of desperation, Issa asks one of her residents to attend. She even tells him he can bring his “annoying dog.” Trina overhears this conversation and invites herself.

“B*tch, I’ll come!” – Trina

Later on Issa meets with Molly and vents her frustrations.

“Yeah, I’m not doing that block party sh*t right now.” – Issa

She admits Nathan had her thinking she could plan everything quickly but it’s been very difficult for her to put together.

They laugh after Issa tells Molly that Nathan has been “Sandra Buh-locked.” The planning of the block party has been keeping her busy and she’s happy to just be focusing on herself at the moment. Issa is also ready to start back up her job search. She’s convinced she needs a “regular, boring” job like Molly.

Molly is just about over her job. Taurean comes up and Issa tells Molly that she did him wrong. But Molly sees it differently. She feels like she was just doing what she needed to do to be ahead of things at work. Regardless, he’s been salty with her and the tension is hard to ignore.

“The double standard is real. For guys, it’s all business. For women, it’s shade. I’ma break the cycle.” – Molly

Issa suggests that Molly takes a different approach. She urges Molly to smooth things over with Taurean and break bread together. If Molly explains to Taurean where she’s coming from, they can salvage their work relationship.

A birthday is around the corner for Issa. Since her last one was awful, she wants the day to be drama free and happy this time around. She gets excited when Molly reminds her that she’s taking her somewhere Saturday for her birthday surprise.

Lawrence catches up with this dad, Marcus, at a restaurant.

He asks Lawrence how Issa has been. Lawrence tells him that they have been in communication. But they are done and he doesn’t see them getting back together in the future. The dating scene hasn’t been promising him for him, though.

Marcus tells him that relationships take work. But Lawrence thinks things came easy for his dad and him mom’s relationship. They met, fell in love and got married in Lawrence’s opinion.

But Marcus scoffs at this. He reminds Lawrence that his mom Sylvia is anything but easy.

“I just want to meet a woman without any baggage.” – Lawrence

“What you mean? Your momma and me had matching luggage. Then we put in work. Y’all kids don’t wanna work.” – Marcus

As Lawrence helps Marcus set up his new voicemail greeting message, he tells Lawrence he has to find his own happy ending.

Big things are happening for Molly at the firm.

Molly walks into the office and asks her legal assistant Karen if she’s seen Taurean. She wants to set up a meeting with him later that day.

However, Karen tells her that Taurean has been in the conference room with the partners.

The partners have just asked to speak with Molly as well.

When she walks in the conference room, she takes a seat next to Taurean. She is informed that the company just got a major account with METRA. They don’t want to have any issues or mishaps. For that to become a reality, they want both Molly and Taurean to take the lead on the case.

Apparently they were impressed with the work Molly did when she took over on Taurean’s previous case.

“You guys make a great team.” – Malcolm

Taurean throws some shade and says it’s great to have an aggressive teammate as Molly.

Issa is making some career moves of her own.

She’s at the Beat Crew office hoping to convince Eli that she would be a good fit for the non-profit organization. Her love of music and ties to the community would make her a great asset.

When asked about what happened with her previous job, Issa explains she left to do something she’s more passionate about. This nonprofit allows her to combine her love of her community and of music in the perfect work setting.

After being told that the office will be in touch soon after having a talk with the budget department, Issa thanks Eli for hearing her out.

Nathan returns.

As Molly is parking outside of Issa’s place, she sees Nathan walking up with flowers in his hand.

She hops out the car to question him about what he’s doing.

“Does she know you’re here?” – Molly

“Nah.” – Nathan

“Then why are you here? Disappear a whole month. No calls and no texts. What the h*ll is wrong with you?” – Molly

Nathan can’t really think of an answer but tells Molly he’s just there to see Issa. Molly tells Nathan that it’s Issa’s birthday and she’s happy. So it would be best if he took his flowers and left. She’s not going to allow him to ruin Issa’s day.

Realizing Molly will not be backing down, Nathan agrees to leave with the flowers.

Issa gets her surprise from Molly.

A blindfolded Issa is taken to a lively location outside. There’s a lot of people there and a pretty long line forming. After the blindfold is removed, Molly tells Issa that they are going to watch “The Last Dragon” outside.

Kelli is already there holding their seats on the lawn. Issa is happy about this surprise gift.

They hug and Issa feels like she’s starting things right at 30. She’s going to focus on getting money and having close friendships with her girls.

They update each other about what is going on in their professional lives. Issa is trying to secure a job at another nonprofit organization and Molly is now the co-counsel for a huge client.

Molly feels like she did things right at work by doing what she needed to do to get the attention of the big wigs at the firm.

Issa thinks this is still a very stressful way to do things for Molly but she congratulates her anyway.

Regardless, Molly is focused and wants to become partner at the firm soon. Issa is fine with this after Molly tells her she’s taking Issa to Morocco when she becomes partner.

Lawrence is spotted.

They run into Lawrence. He and Issa exchange some lines from the film to one another. Molly calls them both nerds and he tells them he’s meeting up with Chad.

After noticing that Issa is captivated with Lawrence as he walks away, Molly jokingly asks Issa if she’s okay. The two best friends then head over to Kelli.

Kelli tells Issa happy birthday and then they hug.

As far as things are going between Kelli and Tiffany as of now, things are slightly better as Kelli has been made the baby’s godmother.

Understanding that being a godmother can come with legal consequences like taking care of the child if the mother dies prematurely, Issa reminds Kelli that Tiffany’s husband Derek would actually be in line before her.

“I hope so because if I wanted a baby I would have kept the last one.” – Kelli

They toast to Issa’s birthday.

There’s a quick update on their love lives.

Kelli is no longer dealing with Julian, the guy she met at Coachella. Apparently the deal breaker was he refused to go down on her.

Molly says she liked Andrew but he ended up “doing too much.” So that had to end.

As Kelli looks around the event, she quickly sees that a few of her past flings are there. With the movie being shown on the lawn close to a graveyard, Kelli isn’t thrilled to see so many of her “s*x ghosts” in one place.

She shoots a bird at Qwantrell.

“F*ck you, Qwantrell!” – Kelli

The man looks at Kelly, confused by her actions. She then realizes that he’s actually not Qwantrell.

But that doesn’t stop her from walking over to shoot her shot.

Lawrence gets a surprising update from Chad.

Meanwhile, Issa takes notice of Lawrence again. He’s walking over to Chad and his other friends.

When Lawrence sits down, he realizes that Chad has a purse. After cracking some jokes, Chad reveals that the purse actually belongs to Leah, his former fiancée. Apparently Leah took Chad back.

This is surprising to Lawrence since Chad cheated on Leah.

“I did a thing. She forgave that thing, that’s it.” – Chad

He also admits that he didn’t feel like starting over with another woman. One of their friends agrees that starting over with someone else is not the business.

Although Lawrence thinks that Chad and Leah getting back together must have been an easy process for Chad, their mutual friend explains that Chad had to do a lot of groveling and pleading to get Leah back.

“You don’t know what I been through. The aunties I had to apologize to, smoothies I had to blend…N*gga I on watched so much Project Runway, I could sew an A-line skirt.” – Chad

But Chad says it was all worth it to get Leah back because the head is amazing.

The event organizer, a black woman, takes the mic to thank everyone for coming out to the first ever “We Gotta Have It” summer screening.

Molly tells Issa that the woman worked with Tiffany before.

Events such as these are usually very white washed, so Issa is surprised that the organizer was able to bring out so many black faces.

While in line for drinks, Molly spots Jared.

She walks over to speak. They have small talk about their careers. Molly confirms she’s still working towards becoming a judge. Jared is now the regional manager at Enterprise.

Things get awkward after a man walks up to Jared and asks him to get him a drink as he heads back over to their blanket to sit.

Molly is then reminded of how uncomfortable she was when they dated, knowing that he is actually bi. So she tells him she has to head back before she misses the beginning of the movie.

Jared reminds her that she was in line for a drink. Molly lies and says she’s practicing Ramadan even though she’s not a Muslim.

She walks off so fast she bumps into Lawrence. He asks her if she’s okay.

When Molly gets back to Issa, she tells her about her run in with Jared. She believes her instincts were right and he’s never going to be able to only focus on women.

Issa gets an unexpected gift from Lawrence.

The movie starts and Kelli walks back over. Apparently that was Qwantrell and they are “back together.”

Both Issa and Molly decide to not even get involved in Kelli’s shenanigans.

Lawrence then walks up and hands Issa a box of Raisinets. He wishes her a happy birthday as he gifts Issa her favorite candy.

She thanks him and he sits beside her as someone behind them yells for him to sit his “big head a*s” down.

They have a quick conversation about Issa’s block party. She tells Lawrence that it’s on hold for now because it got so hard to plan. The rejections really got to her. This seemingly disappoints Lawrence and he tells her he’s got to get back to his friends.

Molly was wrong about Jared.

As they gather their belongings as the film ends, Issa vents that black people should be able to have more events like this closer to their own communities.

Jared and his male acquaintance walk towards them.

Molly tells them to all be cool. He speaks to Kelli and Issa. There are two women with him. And the male acquaintance is actually his brother. But one of the women is Amber, his girlfriend.

Kelli shoots Molly a look for rushing into judgment about Jared.

Issa is inspired.

Before they get to the car, Issa decides to stop by and have a conversation with the event organizer, Condola.

She introduces herself and reminds Condola that they met at Tiffany’s baby shower.

They talk about how hard it was to plan the event and Issa is told that persistence was key. Issa tells

Condola she’s been struggling to plan her own event. Condola tells her she had to focus on not taking no for an answer.

This gives Issa some motivation and she now feels like she needs to go forward with planning the blocks party.

Nathan causes a clash between Issa and Molly.

Back at Issa’s place they have some alcohol and catch up over Hot Cheetos. Issa tells Molly that she is going to get back to working on her block party. Things get a little tense between them after Molly tells Issa she told Nathan to get lost.

Issa wants to know why Molly didn’t tell her about this earlier.

Molly thinks she did the right thing because Issa told her she didn’t want any drama on her 30th birthday.

But Issa feels differently and this leads to an argument.

“You shoulda just told me and let me handle it myself!” – Issa

“Oh. You  mean like you handled going over his house? B*tch you had me over there looking dumb while you was playing Harriet the Spy.” – Molly

“I know you were trying to help, but b*tch I’m not you cancelling n*ggas left and right.” – Issa

“Well when a b*tch is right, a b*tch is right.” – Molly

Irritated by this, Issa tells Molly she’s been really negative lately. She feels like Molly has been assuming the worst in everybody as of late.

She brings up Taurean and says that Molly came for him out of nowhere.

Molly says that wasn’t out of nowhere and she doesn’t want to be stalled out at associate like all the other women at her firm.

Issa then asks what’s Molly’s angle and if she’s going to be partner all alone because everyone hates her at work.

“Cause that’s not you. That’s never been you.” – Issa

This leaves Molly speechless.

Turns out, Issa was right.

The next day at work, Molly speaks to Taurean and questions what’s next up for the METRA case. He informs her that he’s decided to drop the case because she’s more than capable of doing it on her own.

He’s going to work on the s*xual harassment case instead with the same two other female associates Molly dumped. He walks into the office and sits with them as Molly looks on.

The two female associates speak to Molly and one congratulates her on getting MERTA.

Molly realizes that her instincts were wrong yet, again. She tells everyone goodbye and walks back to her office.

Issa meets up for lunch with Condola from the movie event.

She’s going to help Issa plan her block party. Condola knows some people at Roc Nation so she thinks they can be helpful. She assures Issa they are going to make the event one for the books.

On the way back to her apartment, Issa sees flowers from Nathan waiting on her.

Andrew hears Molly out.

As Nathan walks back into his place, Andrew gets a call from Molly.

He’s short with her and tells her he’s busy so she needs to say whatever she needs to say. Molly explains that it’s been brought to her attention that she’s been seeing the worst in everyone lately. She’s been in a selfish space and her last relationship hurt her more than she realized. She apologizes for taking things out on Andrew and others.

This changes Andrew’s tone and he is now open to talking to her again.

Lawrence goes on a date. His date turns out to be Condola, the event organizer Issa just met with earlier that day. She tells him she thought she scared him away after she told him she is divorced.

But Lawrence tells her that’s not an issue and wait until she hears about his multiple DUIs. They share a laugh and prepare to go to their table.

Issa agrees to meet Nathan outside of her place.

“I didn’t mean to take off like that. You didn’t deserve it. I was MIA because I went back to Houston. I was dealing with a lot of sh*t. I don’t know how to explain it but sometimes I just, I get like really down and kind negative and…I just can’t talk to people sometimes. And I didn’t want to put you through that.” – Nathan

“So you ghosted me and left LA because you were in a bad mood?” – Issa

Nathan says that he wasn’t thinking straight and what he told her is the truth.

At this point, Issa has heard enough.

“Nathan, I didn’t ask for you to come into my life. You came after me and then you just left like it was nothing.” – Issa

He tells her he’s sorry.

But Issa tells him she needs some time to figure out what she wants. Nathan tells her he hopes they can talk again soon because he’s back in LA for good.

Left with nothing else to say, Issa walks back to her apartment.

After she walks back in, she finally unpacks her things. After she finishes, she fixes a glass and beams at her new place on her new couch.
