Supermodel Naomi Campbell is making a splash on reality television with her new and very successful modeling competition The Face. Although Naomi says she doesn’t feel like the show is anything like Tyra Bank’s America’s Next Top Model, there have been rumors circulating through the tabloids that suggest the two supermodels are currently at odds over the show because Tyra feels like Naomi is trying to compete with her. Naomi recently denied the rumors and said in an interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live that she’s never had any real problems with Tyra and she thinks the fashion industry has always tried to pit them against each other because they are both black models, a rarity in the business. Younger supermodel Chanel Iman even recently said that racism in the fashion industry is still prevalent and she recalled a moment when a designer told her she wasn’t needed for a fashion show because they already had one black girl. So one can imagine Naomi Campbell’s shock and disgust when one of the contestants on The Face denied that she was a black woman, all because she is fair-skinned.
When talk show queen Wendy Williams asked the contestant, Devyn, how hard it is to be a black girl model, Devyn said she didn’t consider herself to be black. Devyn says:
“I don’t really consider myself to be a black girl model. I mean, I know what my ethnicity is, but I’m fair-skinned and I feel like I have an international look.”
Confused, Wendy then attempted to get Devyn to clarify her comments. When Wendy asked Devyn if she didn’t feel black, Devyn said:
“No, that’s not what I said, whatsoever.”
Naomi watched the exchange in another location, and was heated:
“What the f*ck does she mean? That’s a disgrace! She’s a black girl.”

I think she meant that she has the ability to appeal to different ethnicities due to her features, it just came out wrong.
But what’s so special or more attractive about her features vs the beautiful dark chocolate girl next to her? African American women have a variety of unique features & they’re all beautiful in their own way. I dont see certain features being more “beautiful” than others..it’s in the eyes of the beholder anyway! To me, the light skinned chick aint all that!

I agree. I don’t think she meant to deny her blackness. I just think she was saying that she hasn’t had to deal with the racism/hate black models usually get, because of her “international” features and fair skin. This is further proven by her reaction to Wendy interpreting her statement as “she doesn’t feel black.” devyn said “no, that’s not what I said” because that really wasn’t her intention.
