Salt-N-Pepa Question Why Nicki Minaj & Iggy Azalea Are the Only Two Successful Female Rappers

Salt-N-Pepa made a recent appearance on Wendy Williams’ daytime talk show, and they addressed their disappointment with it only being two successful female rappers on today’s music scene.

When asked how they feel about Nicki Minaj and Iggy Azalea, Salt says:

“We just feel like it’s room for more. When we started, it was Missy, it was Latifah, it was Lyte. It was Foxy, there was Lil Kim. It was Lauryn Hill, there was Salt N Pepa. We can go on and on and on and on. We’re just curious as to why those are the only two names we can say right now.

“I feel like there’s so many women out there that can…that have something to say…that have a voice. It would just be nice to hear from more.

“It’s still a man’s world.”

  1. Well it ain’t Nicki or Iggy’s fault. When black people stopped buying music all of our artists started to struggle. Back in the day we bought albums to the point that R&B artists were selling millions of albums. Nicki and Iggy appeal to whites though, so they can still sell decently.

  2. Honestly Nicki and Iggy will probably be the last ones to blow up for a while. Rap as a whole doesn’t even sell like that anymore unless your name is Jay Z, Drake, Kanye, Cole or Kendrick. Even Nicki is struggling to go platinum.

    1. Kanye is struggling too. His last album never went platinum, so they had to lie and say it shipped a million just to satisfy his ego.

  3. People have been feeling like this since Nicki blew up. It looks like she single handedly killed the competition but I think it’s more to the story. I mean look at R&B. Right now there’s just not that many black people doing well in music. Times have really changed and it’s sad.

  4. Why? Most female rappers don’t even rap about anything. Lauryn Hill and Latifah were the exceptions. The Foxys and Kims were the norm and I’m not trying to buy an album to hear about their s-x lives. The last good female rapper in my opinion was Eve because she would actually touch on a lot of important topics in her music. Missy was cool too because she was innovative.

    1. Thank you. If I don’t want to listen to men rap about their money and hoes, why would I pay good money to hear women rap about their private parts? Nicki is lucky she even has a fan base because she doesn’t rap about anything either.

      1. Nikki came up off tbe strength of Lil Wayne and Drake and thats what gave her notoriety… Salt n Peppa, MC Lyte didn’t have that and still did their own thing! Yeah rhwy were connected in some way to men but they were saying something….Latifah, Yoyo, Kim, even Foxy. But it didnt define them. They weren’t a fad. Nikki is a fad that mirrored Kim before her and didn’t want to pay homeage to Kim who she got her style and thats whar hurts progression. The aforementioned acknowledged and paid homeage. Sorry but can’t rock with that

  5. Trina said this years ago that labels and people don’t want to invest in female rappers. It takes little to invest in guy rapper compared to a female rapper hair, nails, makeup wardrobe etc how she looks. Some feel like it isn’t even worth it to push a female rapper it’s not worth the risk financially so unfortunate.
