‘Underground’ is Cancelled

WGN America’s hit show “Underground” just wrapped up an amazing second season a few weeks ago. As soon as the show wrapped, many wondered if the show would make it to a third season.

Unfortunately for the numerous fans of the show, WGN America’s new parent company Tribune Media just released word they are pulling the plug on the show.

Tribune Media’s CEO issued a statement regarding the show’s cancellation. Apparently, the network is going to go in a new direction and this doesn’t include shows like “Underground.”

The statement reads as follows:

Peter Kern, President and CEO, Tribune Media Company, said, “As WGN America evolves and broadens the scope and scale of its portfolio of series, we recently announced that resources will be reallocated to a new strategy to increase our relevance within the rapidly changing television landscape. This move is designed to deliver additional value for our advertising and distribution partners and offer viewers more original content across our air. Despite ‘Underground’ being a terrific and important series, it no longer fits with our new direction and we have reached the difficult decision not to renew it for a third season. We are tremendously proud of this landmark series that captured the zeitgeist and made an impact on television in a way never before seen on the medium. We thank the incomparable creators Misha Green and Joe Pokaski and the great John Legend, along with the talented creative team and cast who brought the unsung American heroes of the Underground Railroad to life. We are grateful to the loyal fans of ‘Underground’ and our partners at Sony Pictures Television. It is our hope that this remarkable show finds another home and continues its stories of courage, determination and freedom.”

Word on the street is the network’s revamp will focus on more “conservative” programming.

We’re sad to see it go. What are your thoughts?

  1. I’m not even surprised. These Trumpets want to ruin every damn thing. Hopefully Netflix will pick it up.

  2. This is why I don’t like getting too invested in new shows. Most of them are just going to get cancelled anyway.

  3. I knew this was coming when I saw WGN was bought out and their most popular show wasn’t renewed. The world doesn’t need another Fox News. This Trump era we’re living in sucks in multiple ways.

  4. What’s worse is that OWN and BET have both passed on picking it up. It’s up to the cable shows now or maybe Netflix or Hulu.

    1. Yeah they are saying it’s too expensive to make and BET and OWN can’t afford it. But I would prefer someone pick it up who can afford it and not water it down or ruin it like BET is known to do.
