R&B singer Lauryn Hill gave the world a gem when she dropped her “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” album 15 years ago. In fact, the album is considered a classic in the R&B genre, and her fans have been waiting since that album for her to release yet another industry shaking record. Unfortunately, Lauryn hasn’t done so and instead when her fans do hear about her in the media, as of late it’s been due to her issues with not paying her taxes.

In fact, Lauryn was sentenced to prison a few months ago, even though she did eventually pay the taxes before her court date. In the end, even her new deal with Sony Entertainment couldn’t save her.

However, TMZ is now reporting that the singer was released from prison early Friday morning after serving her three-month sentence. Hill served her time at the Federal Correction Institution in Danbury, Connecticut.

In related news, Lauryn also dropped a new song entitled “Consumerism.” On the new song, the singer says:

“Consumerism is part of some material I was trying to finish before I had to come in. We did our best to eek out a mix via verbal and emailed direction, thanks to the crew of surrogate ears on the other side. Letters From Exile is material written from a certain space, in a certain place. I felt the need to discuss the underlying socio-political, cultural paradigm as I saw it. I haven’t been able to watch the news too much recently, so I’m not hip on everything going on. But inspiration of this sort is a kind of news in and of itself, and often times contains an urgency that precedes what happens. I couldn’t imagine it not being relevant. Messages like these I imagine find their audience, or their audience finds them, like water seeking it’s level.”

  1. She didn’t even try. She just dropped all the “isms” in one song. It wasn’t coherent and it didn’t make sense. You can tell she’s lost the passion to make music and that’s disappointing.

  2. I keep hoping she will come back to what we loved in the good old days, but I can see that’s never going to happen. I still respect her as an artist and her her Miseducation album will always be one of my favorite albums of all time.

  3. Well at least I can always pop in the Miseducation when I need to hear some real music from her again. But this right here is just awful.

  4. What is this? I’m about to just stop hoping Lauryn goes back to her old self. It’s a waste of my hopes.
