Amandla Stenberg Blames Racist ‘Hunger Games’ Fans for New Outlook on Race

Amandla played Rue in the first “Hunger Games” film, and fans of the books were outraged because they couldn’t stand the fact that she is a black actress.

Although many are aware Rue was also black in the books, racist fans didn’t want the character to be black on the big screen.

And it’s this experience that completely changed the way Amandla looked at race.

She tells Solange Knowles via Teen Vogue:

“It was when I was 12 and I got cast in The Hunger Games, and people called me the N-word and said that the death of my character, Rue, would be less sad because I was black. That was the first moment I realized being black was such a crucial part of my identity in terms of the way that I was perceived and how it would affect any line of work that I wanted to pursue. I often find myself in situations where I am the token black person. It can feel like this enormous weight. I have definitely had moments when my hair felt too big or like I needed to make myself…”

  1. IDK why people are so worked up about her being bisexual. I thought that was obvious. She ain’t shock me at all. I bet Willow is too. I say live your life. *shrugs*

    1. I think it’s because most people still look at her like Rue/a little girl. But she will be 18 very soon and she’s fully aware of her s-xuality.

    2. I think Willow would have already made an announcement if that was the case. She really doesn’t seem to care about public opinions. I lot of people think she’s too grown and weird, but I like Willow.

  2. I figured this was what did it for her. I like her and I hope she continues to make these racists seethe.

    1. Did you see them cutting up on Twitter a couple of weeks ago because there’s going to be a black Hermoine? It’s disappointing to know there are so many ignorant people out here.

  3. It’s weird how fixated people are about a teenager’s s-xuality. They are doing the same thing to Jaden as well.
